- Sierra Club threatens suit to protect the White Clay Creek.
- Wilmington, DE - Sierra Club acted today to conserve two of Delaware's most recognizable threatened species - the bald eagle and the bog turtle, and their habitat in the wild and scenic White Clay Creek. Represented by the Mid-Atlantic Environmental Law Center, the Sierra Club sent a letter, charging that the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) failed to consult with the Department of Interior before issuing an emergency order allowing the removal of all fresh water from the White Clay Creek, .
- The Sierra Club is well aware the impact droughts have on both human activity and the environment. Consequently, it is the Club's intention to promote the conservation of our other finite natural resources and recognize the collective inability of the DRBC and the state to formulate and implement effective water planning and conservation measures.
- "Sierra Club members watched as the DRBC and the state did this the fist time in 1999. We thought that water conservation plans designed to alleviate future problems would be implemented, but we will not let them jeopardize the health of the White Clay Creek watershed for a second time due to their inaction," said Debbie Heaton with the Delaware Chapter Sierra Club.
- At the DRBC meeting in late August the Mid-Atlantic Environmental Law Center presented comments on behalf of the Sierra Club sharing the Club's concern that the stoppage of freshwater flow was not conducted in observance of federal environmental planning and species conservation requirements.
- "While times of acute water shortage call for serious and enforceable conservation restrictions, such shortages do not provide for the abandonment of state and federal environmental regulations, and the Delaware River Basin Commission failed to follow proper procedures" said Jim Stuhltrager, staff attorney, with the Mid-Atlantic Environmental Law Center.
- The Sierra Club is also concerned about water quality and degradation caused by improper and inadequate water conservation planning. ...

Subsequently, the Northern Regional Conservation Council of the Sierra Club also voted to support the adoption of the rules. ...
- The emergence of an articulate and effective presence by the Sierra Club in the inland region could well serve environmental causes. There are pressing issues relating to land-use, forestry, commercial development and recreation in which the Sierra Club has a long-standing interest. If those interests are to be represented it will require active involvement by Sierra Club members in the inland area. Burkhardt encouraged Sierra Club members to attend the next committee meeting: Saturday, April 2, 1994, 10:00 AM at the Willits Environmental Center, 316 S. ...

- More than 40 special places in 19 states could be protected if Congress passes strong conservation funding legislation, according to a report released recently by several conservation groups. ...
- Public Interest Research Group, Defenders of Wildlife, Sierra Club, Center for Marine Conservation, Trust for Public Land, World Wildlife Fund, Scenic America, Environmental Defense Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, National Parks and Conservation Association, The Wilderness Society and The National Trust for Historic Preservation. ...
- Congress is considering several different versions of conservation legislation to fund a variety of programs that would benefit national parks, forests, wildlife refugees, historic sites and coastal and marine ecosystems. ...
- The report found that incentives for offshore oil drilling in the Conservation and Reinvestment Act could threaten fragile coastal areas off California's central coast, North Carolina's outer banks and Florida's panhandle. ...
- The two main proposals are the Conservation and Reinvestment Act of 1999 and the Permanent Protection for America's Resources 2000 Bill. A number of conservation groups have been arguing that the legislation is threatened, however, by the attempts of some members of Congress to attach "poison pills" to the final legislation. They say many of these provisions are included in the Conservation and Reinvestment Act, including incentives for offshore oil and gas drilling, the use of coastal funds for environmentally destructive activities and new restrictions on federal land acquisition. ...

- Final legislation must not contain any incentives for offshore oil and gas drilling such as those found in the Conservation and Reinvestment Act which could threaten fragile coastal areas off California's central coast, North Carolina's outer banks, and Florida's panhandle. ...
- Permanent funding of the Land and Water Conservation Fund without restrictions like those found in the Conservation and Reinvestment Act could aid in the preservation of California's Mojave National Park and Big Sur coastline, Colorado's San Juan Mountains, Florida's Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge and North Florida Wildlife Corridor, Maryland's Blackwater Wildlife Refuge, Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, New Hampshire's White Mountains, New Mexico's Pecos National Historical Park, New York's Long Island National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon's Columbia River Gorge, Pennsylvania's Gettysburg National Military Park, Wasington's Mountain to Sound Greenway and other areas. ...
- Flexible state funding under the Land and Water Conservation Fund would benefit states with low populations and abundant unprotected wildlands, including New Hampshire. ...
- A Living Marine Resources Program specifically aimed at funding conservation, restoration and management efforts for coastal and marine areas would benefit coastal states including North Carolina's Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, New York's Long Island Sound, and Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. ...
