People with untreated sleep apnea are up to seven times more likely to be involved in motor-vehicle accidents. People with untreated sleep apnea also have a much higher risk of developing high blood pressure.
- Sleep apnea usually is caused by a partial or complete blockage of the breathing airway in your nose or throat. ... When the airway muscles relax during sleep, this excess tissue can block the breathing passages. This is called obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea also can occur when the brain stem, the area of the brain that controls breathing, is damaged by a process such as an infection or stroke. This is called central sleep apnea. Studies show that sleep apnea affects approximately 9 percent of middle-aged men and 4 percent of middle-aged women.
- Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include excessive sleepiness during waking hours and loud snoring. ... Morning headache and dry mouth also can occur, and obesity is common, but not all people with sleep apnea are obese.
- Your doctor will evaluate the size of your neck — the larger your neck, the more likely you are to develop obstructive sleep apnea. Your doctor also will check your blood pressure, because people with sleep apnea are more likely to develop high blood pressure.
- Many people with obstructive sleep apnea don't have any problems with the nose, throat and mouth. In these cases, a diagnosis can only be confirmed by a sleep study, during which patients' breathing patterns and sleep stages are monitored throughout an entire night. A daytime study of brief naps also can measure the degree of daytime sleepiness and indicate the severity of the disorder.

- Sleep Apnea is a condition in which a person stops breathing for short and often frequent periods during sleep. This prevents the person from getting a good night's sleep and can lead to many other serious problems. It is rare for the person with sleep apnea to know that they have it. There are three main types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central and mixed. "Obstructive" sleep apnea, the most common form, is when the airway becomes physically blocked, usually by a relaxation of the throat muscles or tissue. "Central" sleep apnea, the least common, is caused when the brain fails to send the correct signals to the body to continue breathing. "Mixed" sleep apnea is a combination of the two causes. Sleep apnea is very treatable, but the type and severity of your condition must be evaluated by your doctor before the proper treatment plan can be determined.

- Although the cause of NSRED is not clearly understood, one theory suggests that sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome (periodic limb movement) may partially arouse the individual during non-rapid eye movement sleep and prompt a nocturnal eating episode. ...

Both are relatively common sleep problems that disturb the slumber -- and daytime behavior -- of millions of Americans. ...
- The new findings were made using two types of neurochemical brain scans and detailed sleep studies in 13 patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA), a rare and fatal degenerative neurological disease almost always accompanied by severe sleep disorders. Their results from the MSA patients, who all had both sleep apnea and REM behavior disorder, were very different from those of 27 healthy control subjects. ...
- The greater their lack, the worse their sleep problems were. ...
- And patients with the lowest levels of acetylcholine-producing neurons in the brainstem had the most interruptions in their breathing during sleep. ...
- And while the researchers are careful to note that their findings to date can only show a correlation, not causation, between brain chemistry and sleep disorders, they plan further research to explore the relationship. ...
- For instance, the U-M team is recruiting patients with Parkinson's disease for a similar study, to see if brain chemistry disruptions from their disorder may also be linked to sleep problems. Gilman says he and other specialists suspect that sleep disorders may be an early symptom in many cases of Parkinson's disease. ...
- Gilman and his colleagues chose MSA patients as their first subjects for studying sleep disorders and brain chemistry because of their extremely high incidence of OSA, RBD and other sleep problems; their disease's tendency to cause degeneration of certain nerve cells in their brains and spinal cords; and clinical evidence that some of their sleep problems can be successfully treated with medications that replace lost dopamine. ...
- Also known as Shy-Drager Syndrome, MSA usually strikes people in their 40s, 50s or 60s, and affects blood pressure, muscle tone and movement, balance, bladder control and sleep. ...

- Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS).
- Sleep apnea syndrome is a breathing disorder characterized by the cessation of breathing for at least ten seconds, which occurs repetitively throughout the night and is accompanied by hypoxia and hypercapnia. Apnea may occur as a result of failure of respiratory drive (central apnea), obstruction of the upper airway (obstructive apnea), or a mixed pattern (mixed apnea) during sleep. The initial evaluation of individuals suspected of having sleep apnea syndrome should include a thorough medical and sleep history (including family or bed partner observations), and a physical examination including laboratory serologic testing, and possibly a detailed sleep log and/or psychological testing. If there is a high suspicion of sleep apnea syndrome after evaluating an individual, a sleep study is indicated to establish a diagnosis.
- Currently, polysomnography (PSG), which requires an overnight stay in a sleep laboratory, is the optimum test for diagnosing sleep apnea. It includes evaluation of sleep staging, airflow and ventilatory effort, arterial oxygen saturation, electrocardiogram (single lead), body position, and periodic limb movements (i. ... , anterior tibialis EMG to assess sleep-associated leg movements). Determined from the collective data are total sleep time, sleep latency, arousals after sleep onset, time spent in nREM and REM sleep, central and obstructive sleep apneas, and the severity of SAS in terms of the apneas and/or hypopneas per hour. ... It is imperative that a sleep study be interpreted by someone with expertise in sleep disorders since an accurate diagnosis is crucial to avoid undertreatment or overtreatment of individuals. ... , weight loss, avoidance of alcohol and sedatives before sleep, avoidance of supine sleep position); nasal CPAP; oral/dental devices; or surgical procedures (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty UPPP , nasal surgery, tonsillectomy, maxillofacial surgery, tracheostomy).

- Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT).
- A multiple sleep latency test involves repeated measurement of sleep latency, which is the time to the onset of sleep.
