- Every night, a phantom---sleep apnea syndrome---steals sleep from millions of unsuspecting victims. You may be among them if your sleep is repeatedly disturbed by snoring, by choking halts in breathing, and by gasping efforts to breathe. ...
- The struggle between sleep and breathing is caused by sleep apnea syndrome which leaves victims unaware of the source of their daytime sleepiness. Less than five percent of those who may have sleep apnea have been diagnosed and treated. Because sleep disorders medicine is so new, many physicians may not be trained to recognise the symptoms. ...

- • Sleep Apnea.
- Sleep Apnea.
- Sleep apnea is a disorder of interrupted breathing during sleep. ... These changes allow the windpipe to collapse during breathing when muscles relax during sleep. This problem, called obstructive sleep apnea, is usually associated with loud snoring (though not everyone who snores has this disorder). Sleep apnea also can occur if the neurons that control breathing malfunction during sleep.
- During an episode of obstructive apnea, the person’s effort to inhale air creates suction that collapses the windpipe. ... The frequent awakenings that sleep apnea patients experience leave them continually sleepy and may lead to personality changes such as irritability or depression. Sleep apnea also deprives the person of oxygen, which can lead to morning headaches, a loss of interest in sex, or a decline in mental functioning. ... Patients with severe, untreated sleep apnea are two to three times more likely to have automobile accidents than the general population. In some high-risk individuals, sleep apnea may even lead to sudden death from respiratory arrest during sleep.
- An estimated 18 million Americans have sleep apnea. ... Patients with the typical features of sleep apnea, such as loud snoring, obesity, and excessive daytime sleepiness, should be referred to a specialized sleep center that can perform a test called polysomnography. ... If sleep apnea is diagnosed, several treatments are available. Mild sleep apnea frequently can be overcome through weight loss or by preventing the person from sleeping on his or her back. ... People with sleep apnea should never take sedatives or sleeping pills, which can prevent them from awakening enough to breathe.

- Obstructive Sleep Apnea Disorder.
- Obstructive sleep apnea, OSA, is a breathing related sleep disorder which can cause people to snore, as well as pose serious health threats. OSA is a condition that occurs when a person regularly stops breathing (apnea) for 10 seconds or longer during sleep. It is usually caused by either the tongue or the soft palate falling back against the back of the throat when the muscles in the neck and throat relax during sleep. ...
- Sleep apnea episodes can happen from 5 to 50 times an hour, and sometimes breathing stops hundreds of times each night. Additionally, from the interrupted loss of sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness can occur. This may put a person experiencing obstructive sleep apnea symptoms at even greater risk by causing them to fall asleep while driving or working. ...
- A sleep study is the only way to positively diagnose sleep apnea. Once diagnosed, there are several types of sleep apnea aids and treatment that can offer patients a clear and open airway during sleep. For some people, developing good sleeping habits, losing weight, and avoiding sleep medications and alcohol may cure the sleep apnea syndrome. Other people may need to use a breathing device or oral appliance that prevents the airway from closing during sleep. Beyond surgery, an oral mechanical appliance is the most common prevention and relief for sleep apnea. ...

- What is Sleep Apnea?.
- Sleep Apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than generally understood. First described in 1965, sleep apnea is a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. It owes its name to a Greek word, apnea, meaning “want of breath. ” There are two types of sleep apnea: central and obstructive. Central sleep apnea, which is less common, occurs when the brain fails to send the appropriate signals to the breathing muscles to initiate respirations. Obstructive sleep apnea is far more common and occurs when air cannot flow into or out of the person’s nose or mouth although efforts to breathe continue. ...

- Who Gets Sleep Apnea? .
- Sleep apnea occurs in all age groups and both sexes but is more common in men (it may be under diagnosed in women) and possibly young African Americans. It has been estimated that as many as 18 million Americans have sleep apnea. Four percent of middle-aged men and 2 percent of middle-aged women have sleep apnea along with excessive daytime sleepiness. People most likely to have or develop sleep apnea include those who snore loudly and also are overweight, or have high blood pressure, or have some physical abnormality in the nose, throat, or other parts of the upper airway. Sleep apnea seems to run in some families, suggesting a possible genetic basis.
