All of my life I have found it difficult to sleep, although in recent years it has got worse. ... Decide which ep you are most in the mood for (my method of deciding is quite simple - glance around the room at the pictures until one jumps out at you and you think, "Oh! - www.sleepfoundation.org
- WHY SLEEP MATTERS.
- All living beings sleep, including humans, animals and plants. But why? Answering this very basic question has spurred extensive scientific study into what happens when we sleep and what happens to our bodies when we are sleep deprived. Through this research, a growing body of knowledge now shows that sleep is not only essential to mental and physical performance, but that not getting enough may weaken the immune system and may be a risk factor for type-II diabetes and obesity. ...
- What Is Sleep?.
- After a century of scientific study on sleep including four decades of modern intensive research the function of sleep remains a biological enigma. However, the process of sleep has been widely studied and involves a natural rhythm that begins in the evening when the pineal gland in the brain releases melatonin, a hormone signaling time for sleep. As the person readies for sleep, breathing slows, muscles become limp, the heart rate slows, and body temperature decreases slightly. ... Following this period of calm, the alpha waves are replaced by theta waves that signal what researchers call stage one sleep. ...
- From stage one sleep, sleepers go back and forth through various stages of sleep, all of which produce noticeable changes in brain activity and other physiological functions. Stage two sleep lasts for 10 to 15 minutes and produces bigger spikes in brain waves than stage one. At stage three, the sleeper enters a deep sleep with slow delta waves. Then comes stage four followed by REM (rapid eye movement) sleep when eyes move rapidly back and forth and people have visual dreams, an important part of the sleep process. Once REM sleep is over, the sleeper goes back to stage two to begin the cycle again. ...
- But changing brain activity is only the beginning of what happens during sleep. During sleep, the body secretes a number of necessary hormones that affect growth, regulate energy, and affect metabolic and endocrine functions. For example, near the end of the sleep period, the body secretes the stress hormone, cortisol, which stimulates alertness. Sleep is also the time when growth hormone is secreted, which drives childhood growth and plays an important part in regulating muscle mass in adults. Further, the sleep cycle affects secretion of the hormone, leptin. ...

- Study shows that the actual 'quantity' of sleep may in fact raise women's risk of developing coronary heart disease!.
- An on-going study of approximately 72,000 nurses has revealed that BOTH too little sleep -- or too much sleep -- can raise the risk of developing heart disease.
- The study showed that women who averaged five hours or less of sleep a night were 39 percent more likely to develop heart disease than women who were able to get eight hours of sleep. Even those sleeping six hours a night had an 18 percent higher risk of developing blocked arteries than those getting eight-hours of sleep.
- "People should start thinking of adequate sleep not as a luxury but more as a component of a healthy lifestyle," said Dr. Najib Ayas, a sleep disorders specialist who was at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston when he led the study.
- The researchers suggested that getting enough sleep may be nearly as important to heart health as eating right and exercising. And they pointed out a recent poll that found that about one in three Americans has long-term sleep deprivation.
- Previous studies of men and women found short-term sleep deprivation can raise blood pressure and levels of the stress hormone Cortisol; lower glucose tolerance and, lead to variations in heart rate -- all strong indicators of heart disease.
- Phyllis Zee, director of the sleep disorders center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said the findings show that doctors should be asking their patients about sleep habits. And if those patients are losing sleep by choice, "they may want to rethink their priorities," Zee said.

115. The Effects of Circumcision on Sleep-Wake States in Human Neonates
- www.cirp.org
- The Effects of Circumcision on Sleep-Wake States in Human Neonates.
- The effect of circumcision on the proportion of subsequent sleep-wake states was assessed in eleven, normal full-term neonates. We speculated, as had been previously suggested, that the proportion of quiet sleep would be increased as a response to this "procedure. " Our results demonstrate that no quiet sleep state shifts were present in the immediate hour after circumcision: instead, significant increases in the proportion of wakefulness were noted, suggesting that later quiet sleep state shifts, if present, may be secondary to changes in wakefulness.
- Although much research effort has been expended on the study of rapid eye movements (REM, active) and nonrapid eye movement (NREM, quiet) sleep, the functions of these two cyclically recurring states remain obscure. ... In adults, following selective deprivation of either REM or Stage IV NREM sleep, the deprived state is "recovered. " Following total sleep deprivation, Stage IV NREM sleep is recovered before REM sleep (1-3).
- (4) reported a significant selective elevation of the proportion of quiet sleep, a decreased latency to the first quiet sleep period, and increased numbers of quiet sleep periods during the 10 hr of sleep following routine neonatal circumcision. They concluded that these indications of quiet sleep "priority" were not the result of heightened levels of exercise and fatigue surrounding the procedure, but rather, were the manifestations of a "stress" response to the circumcision, similar to the conservation-withdrawal response first described by Engle (5,6). Their suggestion that the inhibited, well regulated physiological state of quiet sleep serves as the organismic substrate of the behaviorally observed conservation-withdrawal syndrome is an interesting speculation.
- In a previous study, Anders and Roffwarg (7) reported that following either selective interruption of REM or NREM sleep, or deprivation of total sleep, neonates exhibited a propensity to recover quiet sleep rather than active-REM sleep. This indication of a "priority" for quiet sleep, supports the results reported by Emde et al. ... (8) have reported an increase in the proportion of NREM sleep and increased numbers of arousals during the night following presleep exercise. It is not clear from these two studies, however, whether the elicited quiet sleep "priority" is related to the "stress" associated with sleep deprived and/or exercised, or whether it is secondary to the wakefulness and fatigue that results from the experimental manipulations.
- Since this response to arousal has been observed to occur within 20 minutes, we speculated that a conservation-withdrawal or quiet sleep response to a "natural stress" might be expected to be as rapid.
- We looked at the effects of circumcision on immediate changes in sleep-wake state proportions.

121. Circumcision Stress and Neonatal Sleep
- www.cirp.org
- Stress and Neonatal Sleep.
- Koenig, MD and Samuel Wagonfeld, MD Routine circumcision, done without anesthesia in the newborn nursery was usually followed by prolonged nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Since this form of sleep has been described as a low point on an arousal continium, we consider its increase to be consistent with a theory of conservation-withdrawal in response to stressful stimulation.
- We observed that this procedure was frequently followed by prolonged sleeping which began with a lengthy, behaviorally inactive sleep period without rapid eye movements (non-REM sleep). This observation was noteworthy because the newborn ordinarily begins a sleep cycle with active, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (1-4). ...
- It seemed to us that two different theories offered explanations as to how stressful stimulation would prolong sleep, and that they led to mutually incompatible predictions. ... It considers REM sleep to serve the primary function of processing and programming information which has been taken in during the wakeful period prior to sleep (5). This theory led us to the prediction of an increase in REM sleep after a large amount of stimulation. ... This led us to predict an increase in non-REM sleep after such stimulation, since this form of infant sleep has been described as a low point on an arousal continuum, a condition in which thresholds to sensory stimulations are high and motoric activity is low (8,9).
- The Plastibel technic (10) for circumcision was used on all infants studied, is one in which a midline foreskin incision allows a plastic mold to be slipped over the glans penis. A ligature is then tied over the mold which results in a progressive ischemic necrosis of the foreskin during the next several days.
- Since pilot work verified that prolonged non-REM sleep periods often followed circumcision, we carried out an initial study without polygraphic or other manipulations in which minute-by- minute observations of behavioral states were made. ... Infants were observed continuously over a 24-hour period, with individual investigators rotating 4-5 hour observation assignments. ... One of the 2 circumcised infants who did not have an increase in non-REM sleep was kept awake by his father for a prolonged period after circumcision. ... For purposes of comparison, 3 infants of the same age without circumcision were observed for 24 hours; they showed no increase in non-REM sleep during the second 12 hours.
