131. Sleep (nutrition for our children's minds and bodies)
- As an educator who has taught in the area of elementary school health for many years, I have always been interested in the various health concerns of children. My past research activities have included the issues of Type 2 Diabetes as well as dental disparities in children. Last year, however, I became fascinated with the whole concept of children's sleep patterns. It seems that we are a sleep-deprived nation, and unfortunately, more than 70 million Americans, including children, do not get enough sleep.
- Sleep is essential to good health--it is as important as daily exercise and good nutrition. In fact, sleep may be thought of as "nutrition for the brain. " Inadequate sleep can result in decreased concentration and academic performance. ... In addition, a lack of sleep may result in decreased reaction time and an increased risk of accident or injury. A good night's sleep plays a key role in disease resistance, clarity of thought, and stability of mood. Elementary school-aged children require an average of nine to ten hours of sleep per night, but according to a 1999 National Sleep Foundation Survey, 60 percent of children under age 18 report being tired during the day and 15 percent report falling asleep at school.
- Research has demonstrated that as children get older, their sleep-wake cycles change. By the time most children enter sixth grade, their body clocks cause them to become sleepy slightly more than one hour after those of second graders, and about 25 minutes after those of fourth graders. Yet, these children must arise and start their school day at the same time as the younger children, often resulting in morning drowsiness and dozing off in class. ...
- Sixty percent of children under age 18 report being tired during the day and 15 percent report falling asleep at school.
- Unfortunately, not much is known about children's sleep patterns, and many children's sleep disorders often go unrecognized. A survey of 495 children by Owens and colleagues in 1999 found that one-fourth of all children had a television in their bedrooms and reported increased viewing of TV both during the day and before bedtime. These same children also reported having trouble falling asleep, but only five percent of their parents were aware of the problem.

- HELPING YOUR CHILD GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP.
- The subject of child sleep is of interest not only to parents but also to scientists. Entire medical conferences are organized around the fascinating subject of sleep. Medical journals regularly publish the latest scientific data on child sleep. Unfortunately, not all "scientific" studies on sleep are correct, and not all self-appointed sleep experts give accurate, child-nurturing information. Too often, cultural biases regarding sleep predominate over genuine biological facts.
- Many of the so-called "sleep problems" that parents report in their children are actually the result of rigid and unreasonable expectations that are based on unnatural and unrealistic myths about how children are supposed to be. The incorrect advice on sleep that is found in so many childcare books is based on such expectations.
- There are several mistakes that parents commonly make in the attempt to help their child sleep. ...
- Don't ignore your children's cries. ... Babies and young children are emotional rather than rational creatures. ... Even with the best of intentions, ignoring children leads them to feel abandoned.
