- Non-Respiratory sleep disorders.
- Introduction In the second of a two-part article about sleep disorders in children, the director of the sleep medicine unit at The Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick, Dr Arthur Teng, discussed non-respiratory sleep disorders with Sue Quayle. Story Non-respiratory sleep disorders stem from two causes: medical problems and behavioral problems associated with sleep. This article addresses medically classified sleep disorders, many of which can be managed in general practice. Before a non-respiratory sleep disorder can be diagnosed, underlying medical reasons for disrupted sleep must be excluded. For example, obstructive sleep apnoea ('Australian Doctor' 4 July), gastroesophageal reflux, middle ear infection or effusion, fever and/or seizures can cause children to wake during the night. These medical conditions can coexist with a predisposition to a primary sleep disorder. History is important not only to identify signs and symptoms of medical reasons for sleep disruption, but also to identify any family history. Many patients with non-respiratory sleep disorders have a relative who has experienced similar symptoms. It is also helpful to have a basic knowledge of sleep stages (see Box 1) and sleep patterns. Children's sleep patterns are peculiar to the individual and can vary widely along a normal spectrum with some children needing less or more sleep than others. However, sleep patterns become an issue when they impinge on the child's ability to carry out normal activities.
