Leaves of Grass (First Edition 1855; Final Edition 1892)
by Walt Whitman, American Poet
Walt Whitman revised and rearranged his masterwork many times after the first edition of 1855. These selections are arranged in the sequence in which they were presented in the final edition of 1892, with some additional material from earlier editions and Whitman's manuscripts occasionally supplementing it. When dates are provided for poems they are the dates when they first appeared, followed by the date of final revision. The final revision has been used for the main text, and on a few fragments earlier versions have also been provided. The work on the major body of this text is not yet complete. Selections will be made from each of the 14 major sections of the final book, with some of the major poems having their own sub-section. Many different publications of Whitman's poetry, and other sources of information were used in creating this article, the most helpful being those of Project Gutenberg for the base e-text, and the Library of America volume Walt Whitman: Complete Poetry and Collected Prose (1982) edited by Justin Kaplan for most comparison and ammendation.

So they show their relations to me and I accept them,

The hounded slave that flags in the race, leans by the fence, blowing, cover'd with sweat,

All these I feel or am.
I am the hounded slave, I wince at the bite of the dogs,
Hell and despair are upon me, crack and again crack the marksmen,
I clutch the rails of the fence, my gore dribs, thinn'd with the ooze of my skin,
I fall on the weeds and stones,
The riders spur their unwilling horses, haul close,
Taunt my dizzy ears and beat me violently over the head with whip-stocks.
Agonies are one of my changes of garments,
I do not ask the wounded person how he feels, I myself become the wounded person,
My hurts turn livid upon me as I lean on a cane and observe. (33)

Accepting the rough deific sketches to fill out better in myself, bestowing them freely on each man and woman I see,

Not objecting to special revelations, considering a curl of smoke or a hair on the back of my hand just as curious as any revelation,

- When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom'd,
And the great star early droop'd in the western sky in the night,
I mourn'd, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.

Lilac blooming perennial and drooping star in the west,

As I mused of these warlike days and of peace return'd, and the dead that return no more,
A Phantom gigantic superb, with stern visage accosted me,

Are you done with reviews and criticisms of life? animating now to life itself?
Have you vivified yourself from the maternity of these States?

- Rhymes and rhymers pass away, poems distill'd from poems pass away,
The swarms of reflectors and the polite pass, and leave ashes… (13)
- The proof of a poet shall be sternly deferr'd till his country
absorbs him as affectionately as he has absorb'd it. (13)

I am willing to wait to be understood by the growth of the taste of myself,
