- MA European Politics .
- programme in European Politics are, firstly, to provide suitably qualified graduates with the rigorous training needed to make the transition from undergraduate studies in politics, history, economics, European languages and related disciplines to advanced research in central areas of contemporary European politics (including British, Irish and Russian politics); and, secondly, to equip them for careers in higher education, journalism and broadcasting, in EC institutions, in the Foreign Office, in central and local government, in non-governmental organisations and in international companies and organisations. Satisfactory completion of the two-part disciplinary core course has become a precondition for any graduate student to be allowed to proceed to a research degree within this Department (as in other Politics departments with comparable research status), unless he or she has already gained an equivalent ESRC-recognised qualification and training elsewhere. Successful completion of such a course has also become a prerequisite for eligibility for ESRC research awards (studentships) in political science, tenable here or in other ESRC-approved Politics departments.
- In order to avoid the dangers and pitfalls of parochialism and insularity, British and Irish politics should, we feel, properly be considered in their wider European context, especially as Britain and Ireland have entered their third decade of EC membership. Similarly, with the end of the bipolar East-West division of the industrialised world, we also believe that Russia and the rest of Eastern Europe need to be studied within the wider European framework, rather than in a separate Sovietological compartment. For the foreseeable future, European politics will be preoccupied with problems of integration, disintegration, reintegration, restructuring and systemic change. This Master's programme will build upon the Department's considerable reputation in Russian and East European - as well as West European - political studies, its substantial library holdings in these fields and its ERASMUS, TEMPUS and other European links.

- European Politics .
- Thirty years ago, a course in Western European politics would have served as the introduction to comparative politics. ...
- First, European politics is, frankly, not as important as it once was because we now understand that an introductory course has to include the rest of the world, as we do in Government 133. Second and more importantly, European politics itself can no longer focus only on the Western half of the continent or on the domestic issues of comparative politics. Thus, we now include the "transitional" governments of Eastern Europe and the "supranational" bodies, most notably the European Union.
- Explore the domestic politics of Western and Eastern Europe alike, concentrating on the factors that sustain and threaten democracy and the uncertainties regarding the role of the state in steering the economy and providing social services. ...
- Examine the creation, strengths, and weakness of European institutions, primarily the European Union and NATO.

- The European Union (EU) poses many puzzles for students of International Relations/International Political Economy and Comparative Politics. ... What factors have prompted both the creation and the development of integration (political as well as economic) in post-war Europe? Has the changing structure of the international economic order left European states with no option but to pool aspects of their sovereignty and to compromise their policy-making autonomy? To what extent do national governments still retain control over policy-making? Has European integration perhaps strengthened the state rather than weakened? What has been the underlying social purpose of European integration? These questions, and many others lie at the heart of this module. ... Overall, the study of European integration is a vast subject. ...
6. KCL: BA European History, Politics & Society

- BA in European History, .
- Politics & Society.
- This new degree offers students the exciting opportunity to combine the study of the institutional development, politics and political thought of the European Community with an in-depth investigation of its cultural and historical underpinnings. If people are to feel 'European', questions of history and culture are crucial to the success of European Integration. In a discussion about what Europe is and how it has been shaped, the evolution of European identities in religion, nationalism, politics, warfare, and literature are all too often ignored. Yet only these can bring current problems of European integration into perspective. At the same time, European history is often studied in an intellectual vacuum, seemingly without any relevance to the 'real world'. And yet, the European Union is where history and politics merge, where one informs the other. Through historical analysis of religious divisions, the rise of the nation-state, and the political, religious and social fragmentation in Modern Europe, students will evaluate the evolution of European identities and the ways in which these have shaped the (dis-)integration of Europe since 1945. Finally, the BA in European History, Politics and Society enables students to build on their linguistic skills by developing their expertise in a foreign language further. ...
- The BA in European History, Politics and Society builds on the internationally recognized strengths of the School of Humanities at King's College, particularly in modern European history, modern European political thought, and European Studies. ... Students acquire the analytical skills obtained through the study of history and the social sciences, as well as an appreciation of the historical and political forces underlying European relations. ...
- The degree is a close relation to the BA in European Studies, and combines similarly a wide choice of integrated topics with a depth of analysis. Students will gain an insight into the general themes of European history and politics, but they will also specialize in a particular country for an in-depth analysis of its history, society, politics, culture and language. There is a close interrelationship between the components in politics, political thought, and history both in their European perspective, and in a more detailed, country-specific focus. ...
- Their analytical skills, the breadth and depth about European politics and its historical foundation, and their linguistic skills will be highly relevant to careers in business, international finance, law, public relations, and marketing. ...

The populist challenge to representative democracy is as old as democracy itself but its impact has differed between European countries. Should elected representatives respond to people's demands or to their needs? Is the press a reliable source of public information and a critical check on governments and powerful interests? Are political parties effectively mediating between leaders and mass publics or do they face a legitimacy crisis? Are parliaments able to enforce government accountability? Can the European Union and national governments persuade their peoples to accept the necessity of economic constraints upon their demands? The challenge to political leaders in liberal democracies is to deal realistically with problems without provoking public alienation from the political process, a challenge that they are finding increasingly difficult to face successfully. - Western European Politics: Europe Of Regions.
- Western European Politics 17/03/00 Assess the arguments for and against a ‘Europe of the regions’ A ‘Europe of the Regions’ seems to be a phrase, which encourages the dissolution of states in favour of smaller regional identities. ... Since the passage of the Single European Act: “the goal of economic and social cohesion has become a central part of the debate on the prospect for an impact of economic integration and monetary union on member states and regions in the European Community. ” The definition of cohesion, in the Single European Act, is the attenuation of the disparities between the well off regions and the least favoured ones. ... Therefore regions and the European institutions are now working together with national government to promote regional growth. ... The increase in globalisation of markets has changed the environment of the European companies, making them face intensive price, time and quality competition abroad but also at home. ... The European Commission seeks to maximize the innovation potential of firms in its leading technology: “the general move towards reflexivity and indigenous growth on the regional level has been further accelerated by the process of the European integration since the mid-1980s. ... ” This results in a multiplier effect: more European money is aimed at specific areas, but the regions themselves are now spending more money on development. ... “In this radically reshaped European Union, the sense of regional identity will be a healthy counter balance to the decision-making by Ministers which member states Governments will undertake at the level of the Union itself. ... One should not forget to state that the indirect assault on non tariff barriers to intra European Union trade means that national and regional: “are now in competition to provide the best environment for the production and export of goods and services. ... The European countries frequently call for their domestic importers of foreign goods to obtain licenses. ... After assessing the arguments for and against a ‘Europe of regions’, one can become conscious of the fact that the European Commission is not in a position itself to judge the developments needs of peripheral regions.
