- After more than 6 months on the homemade diet, approx 1 month ago we decided to try Shadow on commercial dog food again. ... With winter here and the possibility of an allergic reaction due to airborne allergies non-existent, we figured if he reacted again it would definetly be a food allergy. Over the past month, we very slowly re-introduced California Natural dog food. ... She had also suggested putting him on a 'brand new'? food called Burns. ... Anybody heard of this brand? So, due to the timing, we are 99% sure he is allergic to something in the commercial dog food and unless we choose to use the Burns dog food, we'll likely have to put him on some sort of homemade diet. ... Unfortunately, we need to get him off commercial dog food as quickly as possible (gradual switch) and I don't have much free time to research BARF diets thoroughly right now so am not sure what to do. ...
- We have tried some different types of commerical dog food, mostly the 'preservative free' types. ... I don't think we are going to take the vets suggestions of the Burns dog food. We have concerns about trying yet another dog food, and we have read many places that grains are one of the most common allergies and it contains rice. ... Now that we are almost absolutely sure what the problem is, and we know now that he has to get away from commerical dog food, maybe (please) we can get him better and past this and he'll become healthy and allergy free. ...
- One of the most interesting things I learned about allergens was that they build up in your (or your dog's) system like building blocks, and there's a "reaction threshold" that must be crossed before you see itching, etc. Your dog can be exposed to a number of different things that he IS allergic to and not show a reaction. ... So, it's likely that your dog has both environmental and food allergies (it's VERY uncommon to be allergic to only one or two things--Flint is allergic to more than 40--and that's just the things they tested for IN MY REGION. That number is NOT high--it's pretty average, really); and avoiding his food allergens has kept him symptom-free. And environmental allergens aren't just outside, either--your boy may be sensitive to dust, wool, cat or dog dander (really!!), mice or roaches (not that you have those!! But they do test for them); all kinds of things found indoors, all year-round. ... and adding a couple more allergens (from the food) tips him over that threshold. Because Flint's allergy profile was pretty complicated, we chose to do hyposensitization therapy--we give him injections of tiny doses of his allergens in the hopes that he'll build up an immunity to them, and be able to be exposed to more allergens without reacting. An important point to remember is that you do not build up immunity to food allergens, so they are not included in the serum. Our hope is to eliminate his reaction to his environmental allergens and be able to have his food options be a little broader. ... It made the diet change SO much easier (in addition to a print-out of exactly which ingredients your dog is allergic to, you also get a list of commercial diets that are safe/allergen free *for your dog. ...

- Although much has been learned since the field was put on a scientific basis at the turn of the last century, our knowledge of food allergies is far from complete. ... Milk, egg, soy, and wheat are the major food allergies in children, whereas peanut, tree nuts, shellfish, and fish are most prevalent in adults. ...
- The field is complicated by the fact that many more people believe they suffer from food allergies than is actually the case. Thus, although up to 20% of Americans have a perceived food allergy, the problem can be medically diagnosed in only about 2% of the population (Altman and Chiaramonte, 1996). The issue is further clouded by confusion with food intolerance and by evidence that allergies are increasing rapidly in developed countries for reasons that are only beginning to be understood. These factors collectively contribute to the lack of understanding that has long been a part of the food allergy field. ...
- Aside from limited attention drawn to the increased prevalence, food allergy has historically attracted little notice. However, with the advent of genetic engineering and its application to the production of food, the situation has changed dramatically. The development and commercialization of a variety of food crops with transgenes has thrust the allergy issue onto a public stage and given the field unprecedented exposure worldwide. Although not yet apparent, I believe the allergy and food technology fields will benefit from this attention in the long term, akin to the progress made in understanding the cellular immune system as a result of publicity brought by the acquired immune deficiency syndrome epidemic. ...
- The increased public awareness of food allergy has arisen from a combination of three factors: reasoned concern, fear through ignorance, and political motivation. ... The third, which was unanticipated and amplifies the second, stems from the goal of certain individuals and environmental organizations to delay the commercial development of genetic engineering, especially as applied to food. The allergy issue was selected because of its vulnerability: In addition to its enigmatic nature mentioned previously, opponents of genetic engineering recognized early on that it is difficult to determine with absolute certainty whether a protein introduced into a food by genetic engineering is a potential allergen. In retrospect, one wonders why the allergy issue was not raised earlierfor example, in the countless plant breeding programs since World War IIthat significantly have not converted nonallergenic into allergenic foods. ... The introduction of kiwi, a relatively obscure fruit, led to the development of a new allergy in the general population of the developed world. ...

- Unlike humans, dogs react to allergy irritations with excessive licking or scratching. ...
- The type that you may think of the most is flea allergy. In fact, most people just assume that when their dog is scratching, it must be fleas. However, a "normal" dog could have a hundred fleas biting it and not show any signs of licking or itching. But, a dog that is allergic to the flea's saliva can have intense itching with just one flea bite.
- Fleas like to set up shop mainly at the base of a dog's tail on the rump, and there can be such intense discomfort that large amounts of hair will be lost and sores may develop from secondary bacterial infection.
- It is actually a simple test using a white piece of paper and scratching your dog's rump or tail base over the piece of paper. Flea dirt is the excrement that the flea produces as a result of biting and ingesting the dog's blood (yuck!); hence the dirt will bleed out onto the paper when moistened.
- Inhalant allergy, which is commonly referred to as atopic dermatitis or atopy, is the most common type of allergy in dogs. ...
- Your Lab may also be allergic to the food he's been eating. Dogs are not usually born with food allergies, but develop them over time to the food they've long eaten although it can occur in puppies younger than six months.
- Food allergies are usually due to the protein and/or starch part of the food, such as beef, chicken, corn, or wheat. Food allergy can cause the same clinical signs as inhalant allergies (atopy) and result in itchy skin and red, inflamed ears. This type of allergy can also cause gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhea. ...
- The best way to rule out a food allergy is by feeding a hypoallergenic diet for eight to 12 weeks. A hypoallergenic diet is a food that contains a new protein to which your dog's immune system has never been exposed.

An adverse food reaction is a general term for a clinically abnormal response to an ingested food or food additive. Adverse food reactions may be caused by food hypersensitivity (allergy) or food intolerance. Food intolerance is a descriptive term of an abnormal physiologic response to an ingested food or food additive. The response is not immunologic in nature and it may be caused by many factors such as a toxic contaminant (such as histamine in scombroid fish poisoning or toxins secreted by Salmonella or Shigella), pharmacologic properties of the food (such as caffeine in coffee or tyramine in aged cheese) and idiosyncratic responses or host factors (such as lactase deficiency). ...
- Food allergy, with acute onset of symptoms after ingestion, is IgE-dependent and potentially involves 4 major target organs: skin, GI, respiratory tract and cardiovascular systems. Acute urticaria and angioedema are the most common food allergic reactions, but the reaction may be a severe, life threatening event, such as anaphylactic shock. In fact, food allergies account for a large proportion of anaphylaxis cases in the United States. Other forms of acute presentations include: oral allergy syndrome, immediate gastrointestinal reaction (nausea, emesis, and diarrhea), anaphylaxis, rhinitis, asthma, and exercise-induced anaphylaxis. I am not prone to jumping to conclusions, but this news is indeed disturbing, and if you know of anyone who is experiencing any allergy -related symptoms, while feeding this line of foods, please urge them to investigate further! .
- And, while I am not, by any means, an expert in canine nutrition, I do know this is not a good idea! It is also my PERSONAL opinion, (and not a documented fact!) that when the decision was made to put this line of food into the "club" stores, such as Sams, Costco, and the Walmarts, K-Marts, and grocery stores, in order to be able to do this, the quality of ingredients was LOWERED, CHANGED, AND DEGRADED, in order to produce the food more cheaply! This is, in my own opinion, where the allergies are stemming from, as just barley being added, shouldn't really cause all these symptoms! Most retailers do not make much on a bag of dog food, and this will cut into their markets considerably. ... But what I can tell you, is that my personal experience, and that of probably 8 out of 10 users of this food line, here in Alaska will tell you, is that they are experiencing, intense itching problems, brittle, poor quality coats, skin problems such as rashes, and hot spots, "BLOWN COATS" at a time of the year, when this can be extremely dangerous for the dogs, (this has been a MAJOR symptom!), and, in the mushing community, during times of intense training, and racing, there is a "stress diarrhea", that in some cases, is extremely difficult to eradicate. ... Probiocin and Blue Heron, are well used remedies here, and are helping greatly, along with changing food, but it is still some thing that is not acceptable! We all know that there are many other factors that can cause this type of allergic symptomology, but the one common thread, the ONE thing that correlates in all areas, is the Eukanuba, Iams food link! .
- When I was able to switch to Eukanuba last fall, I was thrilled with the idea! I thought I could finally use this top quality food, now that I had been assured that the company no longer used ethoxyquin as a preservative! I switched my dogs, and didn't notice a change for about a month. ... Of course there are many factors that could contribute to this last symptom, just as in the diarrhea, but, in all fairness, it can also come from a food allergy, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is related also. ...
- Due to the fact, that mushers use varying amounts of dry food, along with different meats, and oil supplements, depending on training/racing requirements, it took a while to pin down the common link among all the symptoms. ... It is my feeling, that though the company says they tested these formulas extensively, these tests were done in the lower latitudes, where there are MANY more factors that can cause food allergy symptoms, (grasses, pollens, fleas, etc. ... ) that this was not picked up! And, in all fairness, I do have one dog that was not seemingly affected, though he was on the food too. ...
- To make a long story short, if you know or are aware of people who are seeing these symptoms, please ask them to check their food! It may be a prime source of the problems they are experiencing! Due to the fact that these changes within the Iams company came within the last 9 months, people who have been feeding with what they considered a top quality food, would see the symptoms, and not make the correlation! The dogs have always done well on it before, "why would this be a factor in any of what they may now be seeing??? " This is also a problem that is now being corrected, as the word of this gets out ! And, it is even being seen in cats who are being fed the Iams line. It is my belief that not ALL animals on this food will become affected. There will be some who don't, but as well all know, that they are just like us, and while there are some among us, who seem to be "bullet -proof" as far as food goes, most are not, and the more sensitive among us, will be affected the most! .
- and that even if you do not feed this food, you may know others who do, and could benefit from looking into these issues. ...
