- Can A Dog Become Diabetic?.
- Jazzie, as she is called, was getting over an ear infection for which the vet had prescribed special drops, and we figured it couldn't be much more than a bladder infection that was bothering her--the vet had told us just three weeks earlier that, other than the ear problem, she was in good shape for an eight-year-old girl dog!.
- I must let you know that our Jazzie is the sort of dog that every child around the neighborhood knows and loves--the dog that protects all women, the dog that shows her teeth if a strange person approaches a woman without her permission!.
- Much to our shock, the vet told us that our beautiful, healthy dog had become an insulin-dependent diabetic dog! Her pancreas is not working the way it should work and always has worked. He added that we must be very much in tune with our dog because we had caught the diabetes in its very early stages.
- We never imagined that a dog could get diabetes, let alone our dog, who only gets the best of healthy dog food, vitamins, and love. ...
- After the shock began to wear off, our first thought was: "What do we do now?" Did we do something wrong somehow to cause this health problem? How were all of us going to take care of someone who couldn't give herself insulin injections twice a day, not to mention the regular urine or blood checks that have to be taken? What happens if she's at home alone and has a low-blood-sugar episode and no one is around to give her some sugar to protect her from passing out? Do dogs pass out? And then after we threw out all these questions, we suddenly realized that we were dealing with a type-1 diabetic--the condition formerly called juvenile diabetes--much the same as parents who just found out their child is an insulin-dependent diabetic. Except our child has four legs, not two, and can't talk and tell us what's happening to her! What can we do? We love our dog!.
- Jazzie is still the sweet, child-friendly, loving dog she's always been. ...
