- Stanford Project on the Economics of Open Source Software.
- Open Source and Free Software (OS/FS) has gained much notoriety in the last few years. Hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of programmers around the world have spent significant amounts of their time developing open source software. Why do so many individuals donate contribute their efforts toward building software that they give away for free? How do large numbers of contributors coordinate their efforts, if they never meet in person? Why is open source software often more robust, bug-free, secure, and yet cheaper, than its proprietary software counterpart? .
- In 2002, our colleagues at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, led by Rishab Ghosh, conducted the largest survey of OS/FS developers to date, the Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) survey. A total of 2784 OS/FS developers completed the FLOSS survey's online questionnaire, which asked questions about developers’ personal backgrounds, employment status, ties to proprietary software firms, motivations to program OS/FS, level of involvement in OS/FS, and monetary or non-monetary rewards. ...
- We have conducted a second large-scale survey of 1588 developers of open source and free software, which we call the FLOSS-US survey for 2003. ...
- The FLOSS-US survey asked questions on some topics addressed by the first FLOSS survey, as well as questions about several new topics not previously addressed: developers’ roles in OS/FS projects, the extent and intensity of their OS/FS contributions, support given to OS/FS projects by proprietary software firms, and relationships with commercial enterprises based on OS/FS. Altogether, the FLOSS-US survey provides an interesting perspective on the real contributions of the broad and diverse field of open source developers. ...

- Open Source Software Engineering .
- An Open Source project can include every single one of the above elements, and to be fair, some have. The commercial versions of BSD, BIND, and Sendmail are all examples of the standard software engineering process -- but they didn't start out that way. A full-blown software engineering process is very resource-hungry, and instantiating one usually requires investment, which usually requires some kind of revenue plan. The far more common case of an open-source project is one where the people involved are having fun and want their work to be as widely used as possible so they give it away without fee and sometimes without restrictions on redistribution. These folks might not have access to so-called ``commercial grade'' software tools (like code coverage analyzers, bounds-checking interpreters, and memory integrity verifiers). ... Let's revisit each of the elements of the software engineering process and see what typically takes its place in an unfunded Open Source project -- a labor of love. ...
- Open Source folks tend to build the tools they need or wish they had. Sometimes this happens in conjunction with one's day job, and often it's someone whose primary job is something like system administration rather than software engineering. If, after several iterations, a software system reaches critical mass and takes on a life of its own, it will be distributed via Internet tarballs and other users will start to either ask for features or just sit down and implement them and send them in. The battleground for an open-source MRD is usually a mailing list or newsgroup, with the users and developers bantering back and forth directly. ... The MRD equivalent for Open Source can be very nurturing but it has sharp edges -- conflict resolution is sometimes not possible (or not attempted). ...
- There usually just is no system-level design for an unfunded Open Source effort. Either the system design is implicit, springing forth whole and complete straight from Zeus's forehead, or it evolves over time (like the software itself). Usually by Version 2 or 3 of an open-source system, there actually is a system design even if it doesn't get written down anywhere. It is here, rather than in any other departure from the normal rules of the software engineering road, that Open Source earns its reputation for being a little bit flakey. ...

- In this collegial environment, Stallman and his colleagues built an enormous array of software tools for the PDP-10.
- As a result, the ITS software became obsolete, because it was written specifically for the PDP-10 hardware architecture. The PDP-10's replacements, such as the VAX or the 68020, had their own operating systems, but none of them were free software: you had to sign a nondisclosure agreement even to get an executable copy. ...
- From the view point of people in the software sharing community, anything artificially put in to stop people from running a program is simply a deliberate bug. ... One: join the proprietary software world, sign the nondisclosure agreements and promise not to help my fellow hackers. ... I asked myself, was there a program or programs I could write, so as to make a community possible again?" (King, 1999) Determined to recreate the community of cooperating hackers he enjoyed in the 1970's, Stallman decided to devote himself to creating free software. According to Stallman, truly free software must allow every user the right to: .
- (To make this freedom effective in practice, they must have access to the source code, since making changes in a program without having the source code is exceedingly difficult. ...
- In January 1984, Stallman resigned from MIT so that the university would have no claims on the software he created. ...
- Since a lot of software already existed for Unix, Stallman decided to make his operating system Unix compatible, to make the transition from proprietary software to his libré software as easy as possible. He called his project GNU (Gnu's Not Unix), to distinguish his software from the proprietary versions.
- In 1985, Stallman created the Free Software Foundation, a tax exempt charity, to support his work and that of his collaborators. Stallman personally created an enormous body of software: GCC (C compiler), GDB (debugger), Emacs (text editor), and a number of other tools.
- To be sure, Stallman's efforts were neither the first nor the only libré software development efforts. ... However, the Free Software Foundation's efforts were probably the most extensive, and the most visible.

This corporate case of denial has left a vacuum, of course, into which hardware companies, enterprises, and disgruntled Microsoft wannabes have poured huge quantities of often inferior, but nonetheless requirements-driven, open source software. Microsoft still builds the world's best client software, but the biggest opportunity is no longer the client. It still commands the biggest margin, but networked software will eventually eclipse client-only software. ...
- Will Microsoft continue to convince its partners that software is distinctly valuable by itself? Or will the commodity nature of software turn the industry on its head? The hardware companies, who actually manufacture the machines, smell blood in the water, and the open source software movement is the result. ...
- Especially in a maturing market, software expertise still matters, and Microsoft may very well be able to sidestep irrelevance as it has in the past. ...
- If Microsoft is unable to innovate quickly enough, or to adapt to embrace network-based integration, the threat that it faces is the erosion of the economic value of software being caused by the open source software movement. ... Linux is certainly a threat to Microsoft's less-than-perfect server software right now (and to its desktop in the not-too-distant future), but open source software in general, running especially on the Windows operating system, is a much bigger threat. As the quality of this software improves, there will be less and less reason to pay for core software-only assets that have become stylized categories over the years: Microsoft sells OFFICE (the suite) while people may only need a small part of Word or a bit of Access. ... It no longer fits Microsoft's business model to have many individual offerings and to innovate with new application software. Unfortunately, this is exactly where free software excels and is making inroads. ...
- Digging in against open source commoditization won't work - it would be like digging in against the Internet, which Microsoft tried for a while before getting wise. Any move towards cutting off alternatives by limiting interoperability or integration options would be fraught with danger, since it would enrage customers, accelerate the divergence of the open source platform, and have other undesirable results. Despite this, Microsoft is at risk of following this path, due to the corporate delusion that goes by many names: "better together," "unified platform," and "integrated software. - Open Source Software in Healthcare.
- This article surveys the current state of the art in open source software for healthcare, and sees a good fit with the egalitarian ideals that informed the founding of the national health service in the UK.
- NHS organisations usually buy approved commercial systems and have no access to the source code of the applications they run.
- Gradually, though, an appreciation of what open source might offer health informatics is developing. The fact that the software is free is plainly a major attraction. ... It is here that open source has the potential to excel: every application is open from top to bottom making extensive customization and maintenance possible. And because thousands of users have submitted bug reports and fixes for the basic system software over the years, open source operating systems are famed for their reliability.
- Open source in primary care .
- The most straightforward aspect of the penetration of open source software into healthcare is using Linux for what it does best: acting as a solid network server. ...
- Reliability is superb - the system has been rebooted twice in the last six months: to install software for NHSnet, and when my practice manager turned it off by accident. ...
- We are still a long way from a vision of the future in which practices enjoy complete control over both their software environment and their data using open source paradigms. In such a small and specialized area as healthcare computing, single or two-developer outfits are common, and vendor lock can come, not just from failure of the supplier to agree a reasonable pricing structure or make required changes to the functionality of the software, but from straightforward business failure, retirement or career change.
- Just such a situation that faced the Walton NHS Trust five years ago, when the supplier of their HISS (Hospital Information System), a company called CHC, went belly up, leaving them facing the need to completely recommission their system, or rescue source code from the ashes. Fortunately, their agreement with the software house had included lodgment of the source code with a third party under an escrow agreement, and that software ran on HP-UX. ...
- According to the software manager who coordinated the rescue, Neil Spencer-Jones, now a consultant for escrow specialists the NCC Group, such scenarios are not uncommon: "In niche markets such as specialized healthcare applications software houses regularly fail and leave their customers in the lurch: and not everyone will have third-party escrow written into the contract. The open source model is obviously attractive for this reason, but writing medical systems is such an intensive process that I can't personally see the GPL GNU General Public License happening for applications software any time soon. We've had a lot of enquiries from Eastern Europe asking whether we could release the code for our system, but unfortunately the license precluded us from releasing source to third parties. ...

He considered the source code to be the most significant part of software and thus the hackers were "stealing the crown jewels" by making the source code available for download instead of profiting from it 7 .
