- Free software is a matter of freedom, not cost. ... The word `free' in free software has a similar meaning as in free speech, free people and free country and should not be confused with its other meaning associated with zero-cost. Think of free software as software which is free of encumbrances, not necessarily free of cost. Think of it as swatantra software.
- FSF India is a non-profit organisation committed to advocating, promoting and propagating the use and development of swatantra software in India. Our goal is to ensure the long term adoption of free software, and aim for the day when all software will be free. This includes educating people about software freedom and convincing them that it is the freedom that matters. We regard non-free software as a problem to be solved, not as a solution to any problem.

7. Goodbye, "free software"; hello, "open source"
- Goodbye, "free software"; hello, "open source".
- After the Netscape announcement broke in February 1998 I did a lot of thinking about the next phase -- the serious push to get "free software" accepted in the mainstream corporate world. And I realized we have a serious problem with "free software" itself.
- Specifically, we have a problem with the term "free software", itself, not the concept. ...
- First, it's confusing; the term "free" is very ambiguous (something the Free Software Foundation's propaganda has to wrestle with constantly). Does "free" mean "no money charged?" or does it mean "free to be modified by anyone", or something else?.
- We suggest that everywhere we as a culture have previously talked about "free software", the label should be changed to "open source". Open-source software. ...
- Bruce Perens has applied to register "open source" as a trademark and hold it through Software in the Public Interest. The trademark conditions will be known as the ``Open Source Definition'', essentially the same as the Debian Free Software Guidelines.
- In accordance with normal English practice, the term is "open source" standing alone, but "open-source" used as an adjective or in compounds; thus, "open-source software". ...

- A number of the free software evangelists, in informal discussion, felt that the proper response to Microsoft would be to stand together. ... While we didn't try to represent every group and project, many major voices of Open Source and Free Software have signed this message. ...
- We note a new triumph for Open Source and Free Software: we have become so serious a competitor to Microsoft that their executives publicly announce their fear. ...
- Perhaps they misunderstand the term Free Software. Remember that Free refers to liberty, not price. ... In contrast, the business model of Open Source is to reduce the cost of software development and maintenance by distributing it among many collaborators. ...
- There is much software that is essential to a business, but which does not differentiate that business from its competitors. Even companies that have not fully embraced the Open Source model can justify collaboration on Free Software projects for this non-differentiating software, because of the money they will save. And such collaborations are often overwhelmingly successful: for example, the project that produces the market-leading Apache web server was started by a group of users who agreed to share the work of maintaining a piece of software that each of their businesses depended on. ...
- But Free Software is also directly in the user's interest, because it means that the users control the software they use. ...
- Our GUI desktop projects have astounded the software industry by going from zero to being comparable with or superior to others in only 4 years. ... An entire industry has been built around Free Software, and is growing rapidly despite an unfavorable market. The success of software companies like Red Hat, and the benefits to vendors such as Dell and IBM, demonstrate that Free Software is not at all incompatible with business. ...
- The Free Software license singled out for abuse by Microsoft is the GNU General Public License, or GNU GPL. ... But this does not mean, as Microsoft claims, that a company using these programs is legally obliged to make all its software and data free. We make all GPL software available in source form for incorporation as a building block in new programs. This is the secret of how we have been able to create so much good software, so quickly. ...

- Our Priorities are Our Users and Free Software .
- We will be guided by the needs of our users and the free-software community. ... We won't object to commercial software that is intended to run on Debian systems, and we'll allow others to create value-added distributions containing both Debian and commercial software, without any fee from us. To support these goals, we will provide an integrated system of high-quality, 100% free software, with no legal restrictions that would prevent these kinds of use.
- Programs That Don't Meet Our Free-Software Standards .
- We acknowledge that some of our users require the use of programs that don't conform to the Debian Free Software Guidelines. We have created "contrib" and "non-free" areas in our FTP archive for this software. The software in these directories is not part of the Debian system, although it has been configured for use with Debian. We encourage CD manufacturers to read the licenses of software packages in these directories and determine if they can distribute that software on their CDs. Thus, although non-free software isn't a part of Debian, we support its use, and we provide infrastructure (such as our bug-tracking system and mailing lists) for non-free software packages. ...

- The basic idea behind open source is very simple: When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. ... And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing.
- We in the open source community have learned that this rapid evolutionary process produces better software than the traditional closed model, in which only a very few programmers can see the source and everybody else must blindly use an opaque block of bits.

20. Free Software/Free Science
- www.firstmonday.dk
- Introduction: Free Software as a Problem of Value and Reputation.
- Introduction: Free Software as a Problem of Value and Reputation.
- Over the last few years, as the Open Source/Free Software movement has become a constant in the business and technology press, generating conferences, spawning academic investigations and business ventures alike, one single question seems to have beguiled nearly everyone: "how do you make money with free software?".
- In particular two claims are often made: 1) That free software is somehow 'like' science, and therefore good; and, 2) That free software is - like science - a well-functioning 'gift economy' (a form of meta-market with its own currency) and that the currency of payment in this economy is reputation. ...
- If we ask where free software flourished in the period from 1984 to the present, then the answer is: as part of the institutions of science. From Stallman's office at MIT to Torvald's class project in Finland, the participants who make free software are drawn overwhelmingly from universities and research labs (both private and public). ...
- If we trace the roots of free software (prior to Stallman's FSF) and generously include the work of AT&T Bell Labs, Sun, and UC Berkeley on Unix - which arguably benefited from similar dynamics of open source code and shared projects, even if it was not free in the strong sense - then the case is undeniable: free software is as much a part of science as computer science and engineering have been.
- Making the comparison between free software and science gives us the chance to ask anew - just how is it that anyone makes money from the results and products of science, when scientists just give them away for free? Even though we know that science is not free from the ebb and tide of corporate capitalism, or of national political interest, should this not be an equally perplexing question?.
- What is interesting about this comparison is that openness, whether in science or in free software, is not assumed to be moral, but rather structural, and here an interesting conundrum appears:.
- When open source and free software advocates compare free software to science, and the scientific method, they usually make the claim, often explicitly, that through some unspecified mechanism this open, collaborative, non-proprietary community of software development actually results in better software, whether indirectly through debugging or directly through openness and deliberative design. Indeed, even across the lines drawn between them, the Open Source organization and the Free Software Foundation agree on this: guaranteed openness creates better, more stable, less buggy software - software that does not suck 2 .
- So what's going on here? If free software and science have shared the same technical and social structure of collaboration and dissemination for the last 20 years (longer if you count the creation of the Internet itself), then why would the culture of openness, collaboration, and sharing result in creating or improving high quality complex software, when the same system's effect on scientific research is assumed to be negligible?.
- Answer one is that it doesn't: free software is not better, or its quality does not flow from the structure of collaboration. Good software, like scientific truth, comes from elsewhere, though no one's saying where just yet.
- It is in these terms that research in the history and sociology of science and scientific thought can help draw some distinctions that may well help illuminate the supposed conundrum of "how to make money with free software".
- It bears closer scrutiny as a comparison with free software (especially in its international, cross-organizational, multi-disciplinary forms). ...

- (It is true that UI designers have to spend more time convincing others to do things than they might have to in a proprietary because-I-said-so situation; but that's true of everyone involved in a free software project. ...
