- Spencer Tracy was often referred to as "the actor's actor. " Tracy originally studied for the priesthood, but quit school to join the U. ... Tracy enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, and landed his first role on Broadway as a robot in "R. ... " Director John Ford saw Tracy on Broadway in "The Last Mile," and brought him to Hollywood to star in "Up The River" (1930), a prison drama. Tracy appeared in a series of tough-guy roles in crime and prison films for the next few years, including "Quick Millions" (1931), "Young America" (1932), "Society Girl" (1932), "20,000 Years in Sing Sing" (1932), "The Mad Game" (1933), "Looking for Trouble" (1934), "Bottoms Up" (1934), "The Murder Man" (1935), "Whipsaw" (1935) and "Riffraff" (1935). Perhaps using his seminary training, Tracy played a priest for the first time in "San Francisco" (1936), co-starring Clark Gable and Jeanette MacDonald, and received the first of his nine Academy Award nominations as Best Actor. Tracy won the award the following year for his performance in "Captains Courageous" (1937) -- even though the Oscar statuette he received identified him as "Dick Tracy. " Tracy put the priest's collar back on for "Boys Town" (1938), and won another Academy Award for his performance as Father Flanagan. Tracy was the first actor to win the award in consecutive years -- a feat that would not be repeated until Tom Hanks won for "Philadelphia" (1992) and "Forrest Gump" (1993). Tracy was also nominated for "Father of the Bride" (1950), "Bad Day at Black Rock" (1955), "The Old Man and the Sea" (1958), "Inherit the Wind" (1960), "Judgement at Nuremberg" (1961) and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967). For decades, Tracy was a favorite among film fans, who admired his straightforward sincerity, self-effacing humor and seemingly effortless acting style.

- Spencer Tracy, 1900-1967.
- A childhood hellion who in his lifetime pursued the priesthood, founded a clinic for the deaf, became the first actor to receive back-to-back Oscars and unseat Clark Gable as MGM's top box office draw, Spencer Tracy lived a life of distinction. One of America's most popular and respected actors, Spencer Tracy died on June 10th, 1967 after long suffering emphysema and heart disease.
- Born on April 5th, 1900 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Spencer Bonaventure Tracy was the son of devoutly Catholic, stridently religious parents. As rebellious as his parents were rigid, Tracy achieved expulsion from no fewer than 12 schools, though by his entry into Rippon College, he was a model student who excelled at debating and was preparing to study for priesthood. A standout in school drama productions, Tracy nonetheless suspended his education to serve in the Armed Forces during World War I, and upon his discharge chose to enroll in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
- Tracy's New York stage debut was an unlauded role as a robot in the off-Broadway play "R. ... While studying at the Academy of Dramatic Arts, Tracy met actress Louise Treadwell, whom he married and in 1924 the Tracys welcomed a son, John. When the Tracys discovered their son had been born deaf, they devoted themselves to his welfare as well as that of others without hearing, eventually founding the highly regarded John Tracy Clinic for the Deaf. ...
- Through the 1920s, Tracy struggled to support his family as a character actor in New York theater productions, until landing the role of Killer Mears in a Broadway staging of "The Last Mile". Stocky, coarse featured, and intense, Tracy's portrayal of a condemned killer won him critical acclaim, as well as roles in two early "Talkies", the 1930 short films "The Hard Guy" and "Taxi Talks" filmed at Vitaphone's New York studios to accommodate his stage performances.
- To their later regret, casting agents at Universal, United Artists, Warner Brothers and MGM all passed on signing Tracy, who was prepared to stay in New York when director John Ford won a battle of wills with 20th Century Fox that resulted in a five year contract for the actor, with his first project a lead role in Ford's prison drama, "Up the River". The film was a success, though it spawned a long series of gangster roles and an image as a heavy for Tracy, who found himself not only typecast by Fox but stranded in its lower budget projects. ...
- Tracy's best work during the early 1930s ultimately came on loan to other studios, notably the Warner Brothers film "Twenty Thousand Years in Sing Sing", a starring role Tracy inherited from James Cagney who was on a studio suspension. Rather than enterprise on the success of Tracy's outside films, Fox continued to bog him down in back lot films, until the actor refused yet another B-film in 1935 and was fired.
- Tracy was picked up by MGM, a studio which had once passed him by but later borrowed him from Fox for their 1934 film "The Show Off". ... In his first year, Tracy menaced James Stewart in "The Murder Man", and played the brute to back lot actresses in more budget pictures until German film making genius Fritz Lang cast him in his 1936 film "Fury". The same year, MGM teamed Tracy with Jean Harlow in one of her most critically successful films, "Libeled Lady" and his lead in the literally ground breaking disaster adventure "San Francisco" earned the actor the first of a record setting 9 career Academy Award nominations. Spencer Tracy was never overlooked by Hollywood again.

- What comes to mind when you hear the name ‘Spencer Tracy’? Do you see kind-hearted Father Flanagan from the film ‘Boy’s Town’ or perhaps the wise fisherman Manuel from ‘Captain’s Courageous’? Whatever the film, Spencer gave his all to become the person he portrayed, one of the most gifted and adept at doing so in movie history.
- Spencer Bonaventure Tracy was born on April 5, 1900 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, an Irish lad whose American ancestors can be traced back to the founding colonies. ... Changing his mind about the benefits of education, Spencer enrolled at Ripon College as a pre-med student and also joined the college debate team. ... To support himself, Spencer worked at various occupations, among them a bellhop, a door-to-door salesman and a janitor. ...
- Determined that her son would be raised as normally and as independent as possible, Louise soon dedicated her time to found a clinic, which later became known as the famous John Tracy Clinic, founded in the early 1940’s.
- Tracy’s big break into acting came in 1930 with his role as a convict in the play, ‘The Last Mile’. Famous film director John Ford was impressed with Tracy’s performance and cast him, along with another newcomer named Humphrey Bogart, in his film ‘Up the River’. In 1931, the young family, now boasting of a daughter as well, moved to Hollywood, where Tracy signed a contract with Fox Films. ... In 1935, Tracy signed with MGM, where he remained for the next 20 years, making films which show cased his depth and versatility as a leading actor. With 1937’s ‘Captain’s Courageous’ and 1938’s ‘Boy’s Town’, Tracy won back to back Best-Actor Oscars.
- In 1942, Tracy made his first film with Katherine Hepburn in ‘Woman of the Year’. Eight more films with Hepburn followed, and his attraction to her prompted him to separate from his wife, and though his Catholic upbringing prevented Spencer from divorcing Louise, Tracy and Hepburn remained ‘a couple’ until his death in 1967. The privacy which both Tracy and Hepburn were shown in an otherwise scandal-loving Hollywood proves the respect the celluloid city felt for their leading stars, avoiding the censure, damaged reputations and ruined careers which are so common today. Many of Spencer’s best performances were with Hepburn, including films such as ‘Adam’s Rib’ in 1949 and ‘Desk Set’ in 1957.

- Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn.
- Probably the best of the Tracy-Hepburn movies, Adam's Rib is very funny and enjoyable. Excellently written, well directed by George Cukor, and (most of all) featuring great chemistry between Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, this is the ultimate "battle of the sexes" movie and a must-see. ...

- Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn play husband-and-wife legal beagles, so close personally that they share a nickname, who oppose each other professionally in a routine criminal trial. ...
- Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn - Adam's Rib.
- Although I'm a big Tracy fan and enjoyed this movie quite a bit, I didn't find the rapid-fire dialog quite as sharp and witty as most, but it's still a fine movie. ...
- But getting back to the present flick, if there was a longer or more charismatic on-screen romance than Tracy and Hepburn, I don't know what it is, and they bring that chemistry once again to the silver screen in this movie. Their rivalry in the murder case becomes the talk of the town as well as in their bedroom, and Tracy is great as the dutiful husband who suffers Hepburns' barbs and diatribes about everything from his job to women's rights with a sort of calm, stoic exasperatedness, although she finally gets his goat and gets a rise out of him on more than one occasion. ...
- So overall, still a fun classic and well worth your time especially if you're a Tracy or Hepburn fan. ...
