- Rudolph Valentino was one of the most popular male stars of the silent film era. ... For awhile, Valentino held a job as a gardener in New York's Central Park when he became a nightclub dancer, replacing Clifton Webb (a future film star in pictures such as "Laura" and "Cheaper by the Dozen") as the dancing partner of an exhibition dancer known as Bonnie Glass. Unfortunately, Valentino was soon caught in a scandalous society divorce. ... Valentino had an old friend in Los Angeles by the name of Mae Murray (the future glamour queen who would later star in films such as "Mademoiselle Midnight" and "Circe the Enchantress"), who found him work in his first film, "Alimony," in 1918, which lead to more minor roles in other films. Once more, Valentino found himself in the middle of another romance gone bad when his marriage to an actress, Jean Acker, fell apart on their wedding night. This was shortly after Valentino starred in the film, "Eyes of Youth," in which Valentino played a professional co-respondent hired to romance Clara Kimball Young. In 1921, Valentino received a major break when he MGM's script department chief, June Mathis, suggested him for the lead in Rex Ingram's "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. " Valentino's role, however, would become the film's starring role as production ran. ... The film was a big success, but the relationship between Valentino and Metro became bitter when the studio refused to increase Valentino's weekly salary from $350 to $450 during the filming of "Camille. " Less than a month after "Horsemen"'s premiere, Valentino left Metro for Paramount Pictures, which secured him a weekly salary of $500. There, Valentino starred in his most popular role in the film, "The Sheik," an adaptation of a best-selling novel by E.

- Following stints as a gardener's assistant on a Long Island estate (calling on his agricultural knowledge), and as a popular dancer at Maxim's in New York City, Valentino finally landed a job touring with The Masked Model, a show that brought him to California. The first of a string of bit parts, Valentino's first film appearance was as a dress extra in a ballroom scene in Alimony (1917).
- In just seven years before his untimely death at age 31 (from peritonitis), Rudolph Valentino appeared in 14 major films and emerged as a star in every one of them, whether billed so or not. Valentino held quite minor roles in 17 films, consistently cast as a villain -- a "heavy," mainly due to the industry's narrow opinion of Latin looks. Although Valentino won the part of leading man in 1918's A Society Sensation, his culminating bad-guy moment in 1919's Eyes of Youth (appearing in only one reel), proved to be a major turning point in his career, somehow revealing the irresistible leading man lurking behind the cartoonish curling lip. Valentino received his first real shot at stardom thanks to June Mathis, the intuitive screenwriter who urged that he be cast as Julio in Rex Ingram's epic The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921). ...
- First appearing in a barroom scene, a passionate Valentino mesmerized audiences and tangoed his way to instant celebrity (providing some great PR for the dance itself), following through with a fine and complex performance that revealed his character's war time transformation. As a professional dancer in New York, Valentino learned to move with a sort of grace and finesse arguably unfamiliar to moviegoers of the day - primarily used to actors functioning as caricatures of singular personality traits. ... After The Four Horsemen, Valentino was no longer a heavy or a gigolo, despite his exotic appearance and unconventional mannerisms (see the wedding night scene in 1922's Blood and Sand). ... What Valentino liberally exuded complemented female moviegoers' newly-found freedom - thanks to flapperism, to swoon in public. ...
- It was 1921’s The Sheik that so firmly established Valentino’s popular reputation as the Great Lover, and his last film - the comical Son of the Sheik (1926) sealed that title (and ensured volumes of fan mail that continued after his death), but the actor never thought of himself as a conqueror of women - nor as a great actor. ... Rarely acknowledged is Valentino’s marked lack of seriousness in many of his "passionate" scenes - from the eyes and body language, it seems clear that his Sheik Ahmed is largely a parody, until the ultimate scenes when love truly blossoms. ... " Still, the publication of Valentino’s volume of poetry Day Dreams in 1923 further-fueled the public’s imagination - and drove fans into bookstores with a vengeance. ...

25. Rudolph Valentino Biography
- khs.msad71.net
- Rudolph Valentino, a man that many people in our generation have never even heard of, lived a life where he accomplished many goals and became a very well known actor for his work in movies in the early 1900's. ...
- In 1905 when Rudolph was eleven his father Giovanni passed away and in 1908 at the age of thirteen began to attend military school, which he finished at the age of 15. After attending military school Valentino's mother urged him to apply to the naval academy so he could learn some more about discipline, but after he applied Rudolph failed the physical examination and was left being very crushed that he wasn't able to attend the academy. The one good thing that came from this was that after failing the test Valentino spent the rest of his life trying to stay very fit and did the same physical exercises everyday so as not to seem weak.
- In 1913 Valentino left Italy and sailed to New York City where he arrived on December 23, however once Valentino got there he was penniless and didn't have a strong understanding of the English or have anywhere to go. Rudolph also had practically no money has a hard time finding work and many times questioned as to whether or not he made the right choice to leave his home in Italy and come to America. ...
- From 1914-1916 Rudolph has many ups and downs, Valentino gets work as a dancer and moves into a boarding house so that he is able to learn more English, he then gets work as a gardener and starts to get a pretty good life going for himself until he gets a love for speed and wrecks a motorcycle on the grounds that he was a gardener for and is fired. This is where Rudolph was at his lowest point and spent many days sleeping in the park, he even stole some expensive stationary from a hotel so he could write a letter to his mother lying about how well he is doing in America.
- After a little while Valentino's bad luck ran off and he got another job as a dancer at Maxim's, it is there where Rudolph meets Bonnie glass and they became dancing partners and toured all the different clubs in New York and the Vaudeville Circuit together as a dance team. And then after Bonnie Glass retired Valentino continued to dance the same circuit with Joan Sawyer.
- Valentino also testified as a favorable witness in the Bianca De Saulles divorce trial, after which he was charged with "misdemeanor, white slave investigation" by the DA which many people believe that it was caused by Jack De Saulles for revenge. After that Rudolph decided that New York wasn't the place for him and stopped dancing so he could move to California. To get to California Valentino got a job as a chorister in the Merry Monarch and the Masked Model, then when the show closed in Utah Rudolph was paid with a train ticket to San Francisco.
- Is San Francisco Valentino got a job as a dance instructor and met a man named Norman Kelly who told Valentino that he should go and try his luck in Hollywood. Valentino first went to Los Angeles, which is where he made his first screen appearance in the movie Alimony as a dancer. Then in 1918 Valentino traveled back to San Francisco to try and avoid getting the Spanish influenza but still ended up getting it, but because of his great physical shape was able to recover and get a job as the star in the film The Married Virgin that would not be released until Valentino had already become a star. ...
