- In the sixties Robert Mitchum appeared on a chat show plugging a record he had just released. ... When Mitchum played Philip Marlowe in 1975 he was ridiculously old for the part at 58, but his world-weary cynicism and amused detachment still seemed to capture Raymond Chandler's detective far more effectively than Bogart's more famous portrayal in the forties. Maybe Mitchum was Keaton to Bogart's Chaplin. The more showy performer won the contemporary accolades but Mitchum's was the art that conceals art, and has lasted better. Nobody contributed more to concealing Mitchum's art than Mitchum himself. ... But in Mitchum's case we can assume it was sincere. ... While this much-admired work was being done for Huston and others, Mitchum was a regular subject of "booze, broads, and brawls" stories in the Hollywood gossip sheets. ... Mitchum denied the story, but the point is, they wouldn't have made it up about Laurence Olivier. Another essential difference between Mitchum and Sir Laurence Olivier was the former's little-known addiction to calypso music. While filming in the West Indies in 1956 Mitchum, when not relaxing in the more publicised ways detailed above, liked to pick up his guitar and mimic the local music. ... Mitchum also appeared on a surf music compilation in the early '60s alongside The Beach Boys and Dick Dale, performing his own composition Thunder Road.

Turner Classic Movies salutes this rugged anti-hero on August 6th with a 13 film tribute and a repeat of Private Screenings, an informal conversation with his frequent co-star Jane Russell, hosted by Robert Osborne. ...
- Though Mitchum has played his share of unsentimental heroes - his Oscar® nominated turn in the true-life war drama, The Story of G. ... Who can forget his chilling, nightmarish performance as the Reverand Harry Powell in The Night of the Hunter (1955) or his cold-blooded, homicidal convict Max Cady in Cape Fear (1962)? Martin Scorsese remade the later film in 1991 giving bit parts to original actors Gregory Peck and Mitchum. While the new lead players, Robert DeNiro as Cady and Nick Nolte, got the job done with white-knuckled effectiveness, they lacked the subtlety and psychological tension that Mitchum and Peck brought to the classic original.
- Equally memorable are Mitchum's frequent forays into the film noir genre and we're showing three of his best - Crossfire (1947), Where Danger Lives (1950) and Macao (1952). Though his image was strong and silent, Mitchum was also a man of words. ... Mitchum was also one of the few leading men who looked perfectly natural in cowboy gear as evidenced by his underrated performances in a handful of superior Westerns - Blood on the Moon (1948), The Wonderful Country (1959) and The Lusty Men (1952). Another side of Mitchum moviegoers rarely saw was the romantic one; take a look at Desire Me (1947), co-starring Greer Garson, or Two for the Seesaw (1962) with Shirley MacLaine to see Mitchum seduce his female co-stars with his low-key masculine charm. In the mid-50s, Mitchum recorded a record of Calypso-Lounge music that also incorporated his four loves - alcohol, cigarettes, women and song. ...

- One wonders what Robert Mitchum's reaction would have been to this ambivalent, highly-detailed account of a life that was sadly convoluted and, at the same time, humorous in aspect. If Mitchum were alive today, the hope is the author wouldn't have frequented many of this controversial star's watering holes/pubs. What may best summarize this very detailed bio is the ominous tattoo on Mitchum's fingers in "Night of The Hunter": LOVE - HATE. ...

- The Mitchum book is written in the same style. ... There are numerous and lively anecdotes about many well-known directors and actors (John Huston, Charles Laughton, Jane Russell, Marilyn Monroe) and some others who should be better known (Jane Greer, Edward Dmytryk, Anthony Caruso, Jacques Tourneur) The blend of Mitchum's actual life and his film life is shown seamlessly and there are no phony explanations about any of his actions. ... Anyone who wants to learn more about: Mitchum, Film Noir, Hollywood, and a fascinating slice of 20th Century history should pick it up. ...
- The author does a terrible job of making anything about Robert Mitchum's life seem interesting or worth reading. ... There are many other errors of this kind throughout the book (for instance when the author calls Mitchum's son "Josh" instead of "Jim") that totally detract from the readibility and smoothness and veracity of the book. And it's one boring page after another of movie details that have no releveance to Mitchum's life. Check it out from the library if you must read it but definitly DON"T BUY IT! Better yet, just go rent some of his movies - you'll see that Robert Mitchum truly was one of the greatest actors of all time.

In The Lusty Men, the very fine Nicholas Ray drama about rodeo cowboys, Mitchum brings amazing reality to his role as bulldogging Jeff McCloud. ...
- Out of the Past is the film that defines Mitchum's noir persona. ... The Yakuza is a splendid example at Mitchum at his best as he tangles with the tough guys of the Japanese mob. The remake of Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep provided another noirish opportunity for Mitchum to strut his stuff.
- Whether toiling in a latter day Hawks feature like El Dorado or in the early noir western Blood on the Moon, Mitchum rode rough in the saddle. A sleeper of a Mitchum film that's lots of fun is The Wrath of God with Rita Hayworth and a young Frank Langella as co-stars. It's hard to think that without Mitchum we may not have had Cobra Commander, but it's true! And don't think it was just an act, Mitchum spent time in The Army for real.

- Robert Mitchum was an actor whose excellence was most memorably showcased in films that were, with the exception of Night of the Hunter, of distinctly lesser excellence. Cape Fear was made into a sort of logical test of the truth of this proposition by Scorsese's re-make: substitute De Niro for Mitchum in the Max Cady role and watch the picture inexorably collapse. ... , all have their points, but they have their magic in Mitchum's on-screen registration of their various and sundry episodes. ...
- Otherwise, Server contents himself with grinding out that version of English peculiar to Hollywood's flaks: "Mitchum's brooding, darkly sexual characterization in Pursued would anticipate the supposedly groundbreaking style brought to the screen by Marlon Brando and later still by Elvis Presley;" "They Robert Mitchum and Shirley MacLaine frolicked with the Masai, 'commiserated' with the whites still whining about Uhuru and Mau-Mau, and drank;" and (my favorite), "Trina Mitchum's daughter had gone through a period as an aspiring writer, then as a burgeoning photographer. ...

The two constants in his life were set from then on: his self-image as a bum, trotted out for public consumption even when he'd become a millionaire several times over; and his wife, who would remain behind on whatever piece of real estate to which the Mitchums had title and would raise the two boys, Jim and Chris, and the girl, Petrine, while Robert got loaded, made movies, got loaded, fucked, got loaded, brawled, and got loaded. ...
- For the first ten years of his acting life, Mitchum was a contract player for RKO, interrupted only by a stint in the army in 1945 and a stint in jail in 1949. ... Mitchum was caught with two blonde starlets and a number of joints. Server has a bit of a scoop concerning the arrest - he claims to have found the submerged connection between the starlets, Mitchum's ex-money manager, a fraud named Paul Behrmann, and an elaborate shake-down machine run by the LA Vice Squad for a LA hood, Mickey Cohen. ...
- RKO was run by Howard Hughes during the better part of Mitchum's contract. ... Mitchum's early films, with their paranoia and their lighting (films 'lit by matches,' Mitchum said), were scarily in synch with Hughes' Manichean Weltanschauung, in which the heroes tended to sadism, the bad girls tended to bustiness, and their conjunctions were fatally laced with impotent husbands and Colt. ...
- After Mitchum became a free agent, he made his best film, The Night of the Hunter, in 1955, and put in his best performance in Cape Fear, in 1962. In the fifties, Mitchum was Mailer's hipster, the man who 'cultivated the psychopath in his soul. ' But Mitchum, like Mailer, decayed in the sixties. ... Mitchum smoked dope, got drunk, had an affair with Shirley MacLaine for a while, performed in overstuffed and unnecessary dramas for a while for instance, Ryan's Daughter), "frolicked" in Vietnam, which he visited as an entertainer and returned from with the weird notion that he had been inducted into the very esoterica of the war by the armed forces, and accumulated the usufructs of stardom - a ranch, a couple million dollars, alienated children. ...
