- Jean Harlow.
- From a wealthy midwestern family, Harlow was a prep-school girl when she eloped and moved to Hollywood at 16, starting her career as a Hal Roach bit player and working in such films as "The Love Parade" and "The Saturday Night Kid".
- From her first starring role in the Howard Hughes spectacle "Hell's Angels" (1930)--in which she purred, "Would you be terribly shocked if I slipped into something more comfortable?"--through the comedy classic "Libeled Lady" (1936), Harlow's image shifted from that of a delightfully unrefined sexual bombshell to a sophisticated comic talent. Part of the change was due to the more strongly enforced Production Code after 1934, and to Harlow's leaving Hughes for MGM in 1932.
- Harlow spent 1931 and early 1932 in a series of loan-outs, none of which did anything for her career. ... Harlow also shone brightly in the hilarious satire of Hollywood stardom, "Bombshell" (1933) which, in retrospect, cuttingly mirrored Harlow's treatment at the hands of her grasping family. ...
- Harlow's personal life was a far cry from her screen success. ... Harlow was subsequently married to, and divorced from, director of photography Harold Rosson and later became involved with actor William Powell. ... MGM managed to finish the film via some hasty rewrites and by hiring doubles to mimic Harlow's voice and to stand in for her in several long-distance shots, but there was no replacing the "Blonde Bombshell". ...
