- James Stewart of Greenville Dist, SC and Buncombe Co, NC.
- I (Marty Grant) do not know how (or if) I'm related to James Stewart. ...
- James Stewart (also spelled "Stuart" on some records) was born ca 1780/84 per 1810, 1820 and 1830 census (age 26-44 in 1810, born ca 1765/84, and age 26-44 in 1820, born ca 1775/94, and age 40-49 in 1830, born ca 1780/90). If he is a son of Nathaniel Stewart, as I suspect, then he was probably born in Surry Co, NC.
- I have no direct proof, but I suspect that James was a son of Nathaniel and Mary Stewart of Buncombe Co, NC. James did live in Buncombe Co, NC, apparently in the same area as Nathaniel, and Nathaniel did have an unknown son the right age to be James. ...
- James was apparently home with his parents for the 1786 census (age "under 21", born ca 1765/86), and in 1787 (age "under 21", born ca 1766/87).
- James was apparently home with Nathaniel for the 1790 census also, age "under 16", born ca 1774/90.
- Presumably, James went with them.
- James did not appear to be home with his father for the 1800 census, but a James Stewart was listed one page fro Nathaniel in 1800 Greenville Dist, SC. I suspect that this was him, as his household enumerations are in line with James' later entries in Buncombe County. He was listed as James "Jr", probably to distinguish himself from the older James Stewart also listed there (who was listed as "Sr" in 1800). ... I don't know for sure if this listing for James is the same James who later appeared in Buncombe County, NC, but I think that it is. There is only one flaw in my theory, and that is this James (of 1800 Greenville) seems a little too old to be the same James, though his other family members are of perfect age by comparison.
- 1800 Greenville Dist, SC pg 247 James Stewart Jr 10010-10100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1755-1774) James STEWART (1780/84) s/o Nathaniel 1 Male(s) 0-9 (1790-1800) Son? (1794/1800) 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1774-1784) Wife? (1774/84) 1 Female(s) 0-9 (1790-1800) Daughter? (1794/1800) .
