- John Barrymore, 1882-1942.
- A member of "America's First Family of Theater", Actor John Barrymore's classic good looks earned him the nickname "The Profile"as well as personal consternation. Considered one of the premier interpreters of Shakespeare of the 20th century, Barrymore proved a talented comic and character actor in the golden years of American cinema. ...
- Born on Valentine's Day, 1882 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John Barrymore was doomed to greatness. Born John Sidney Blythe, he was the youngest child of acclaimed stage performer Maurice Blythe who had gained fame as Maurice Barrymore, and his actress wife Georgina "Georgie" Drew, the daughter of celebrated actor John Drew. The third child in that family's third generation of thespians, Barrymore's siblings were Lionel and Ethel Barrymore , and all allegedly aspired to careers away from the footlights before being forced into the family vocation.
- John Barrymore's youthful passion was not theater but art, and after an education in American private schools he pursued study of drawing and painting while enrolled at King's College of Wimbledon, England, as a private student in Paris, and at last as at the Art Students League of New York. Exhibiting both talent and a streak of rebellion, Barrymore turned his back on the familial trade and fortune to eke out a living as an independent illustrator, and his work graced the pages of the New York Evening Journal at a time when it led the New York circulation wars led by its owner, William Randolph Hearst. Despite a debut in a 1903 stage project of his parents, Barrymore did not abandon pursuit of an art career until 1905, when he finally joined the Barrymore family in touring the United States with a series of classic and modern play productions.
- Barrymore's earliest stage tour placed him in San Francisco during the cataclysmic earthquake of 1906, and he quickly returned to the East to be embraced by both audiences and theater critics in "The Fortune Hunter". Barrymore quickly became one of theater's most distinguished romantic leading men, with intense good looks and equally intense acting style. The youngest Barrymore's career quickly overtook and overshadowed that of his parents and siblings as he attained idol status with his fans. During the second decade of the century, Barrymore starred in the leading dramas of the day, but by the 1920s was considered the master interpreter of Shakespeare on either side of the Atlantic: Barrymore's leads in "Richard III" (1920) and "Hamlet" (1922) won high praise in both London and New York.
- Though many leading stage actors of the era scorned motion pictures, Barrymore eagerly took to work in the so-called "flickers", so called for their rough, blinking quality. Barrymore's broad and intensely physical style of performing lent itself well to silent film work, which required a good deal of pantomime, and records of his work date as early as 1914. Barrymore's early silent film successes became enduring examples of excellence in the genre, including "The Sea Beast", an early adaptation of the Herman Melville classic Moby Dick and the title role in "Don Juan", the first motion picture released in Vitaphone (a precursor to the "talkies" which offered synchronized music and sound effects on recording). Barrymore's starring role in "Dr. ... Hyde" became a prominent example of the actor's macabre life long practice of distorting his famed handsome features, and proved an eerie reflection of his own self-destructive lifestyle: Introduced to alcohol while a child, John Barrymore was eventually as famed for his excessive indulgences as for his excess of talent.
