- Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes.
- Bette Davis Eyes is one of those songs which, if you're an American who lived through the 1980s, you heard. ... Prior to the chart-topping, brain-popping success of Bette Davis Eyes, Carnes was primarily known in the music industry for her songwriting talents. Together with husband and collaborator Dave Ellington Davis had penned songs for the likes of Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra and Kenny Rogers - not just a high-profile bunch, but an artistically diverse group. "Bette Davis Eyes" was hardly a ground-breaking pop single, but that didn't stop it from becoming one of the most played tracks of the decade. ...

- Bette Davis, 1908-1989.
- Veteran of over 100 films, winner of an Emmy, 2 Oscars, and the first woman to receive the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award, Bette Davis was one of Hollywood's most famous- and infamous- stars. As well known for her off-camera antics as her award winning film work, Bette Davis died after a long and defiant battle with cancer on October 6th, 1989.
- The high-handed diva who insisted "Until you're known in my profession as a monster, you're not a star" began life in Lowell, Massachusetts on April 5th, 1908 as Ruth Elizabeth Davis. Named for her mother, who defied convention to divorce her husband and raise two daughters alone at the turn of the century, Ruth Davis adopted use of "Bette" while a high school student at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. Shifting her creative focus from dance to drama as a student, Davis was reputed to be domineering and self-dramatizing, assets for an actress, but alienating to peers and teachers. While kinder speculation allows that Davis may have adopted a persona that countered a fatherless childhood in a conservative New England community, she was described as "unabashedly arrogant" by the time she graduated Cushing in 1925 and struck out for New York to become a star.
- Bette Davis's defiance served her well and saved her ambition as she met rejection almost immediately upon arriving in New York. Her application to the Manhattan Civic Repertory was rejected by the school's director, Eva LeGallienne, who considered Davis "insincere and frivolous". Undaunted, Davis applied to other schools until she was accepted at John Murray Anderson's Dramatic School, where sheer will, work ethic, and her ruthlessly competitive nature pushed her to the head of her class. Davis's success came somewhat at the expense of her peers, including a shy younger actress from Jamestown, New York, who ultimately withdrew after suffering what become Davis's trademark treatment. While Lucille Ball emerged a star, her career at Anderson's and as Bette Davis's classmate was short lived.
- Davis went from drama school to summer stock, joining director George Cukor's company in Rochester, New York. ... With the iron will that later emerged in her film characterizations, Davis returned to New York, landing a role off Broadway ("The Earth Between") and then a lead in the Broadway production of "Broken Dishes". Davis was received favorably in her Broadway debut, but her hopes when it was announced that the play was to become film were dashed when it was announced that starlet Loretta Young had been cast in the screen version. Davis regrouped, and starred as a Dixie belle in "Solid South" the first of many roles casting her as a haughty Southern damsel, and her second Broadway stage triumph. While the show didn't break any box office records, it brought to light Bette Davis's ability to handle different dialects and deliver lines- something well established stars were finding cost them careers as movies switched from silent to sound.
