- Barbara Stanwyck.
- Originally a stage and cabaret dancer, Stanwyck achieved success in a dramatic role on Broadway in "The Noose" and moved to Hollywood with her first husband, vaudevillian Frank Fay. ... One of Hollywood's most versatile performers, Stanwyck possessed an extremely natural and likable quality onscreen which gave vibrancy and conviction to even routine parts; one could say that she made some less than ideal films, but it would be much harder to claim that she ever gave a bad performance. Her warmth and intelligence were palpable, and audiences for decades loved to watch her lips curl as she unleashed one of the hysterical tirades without which any Stanwyck vehicle was incomplete.
- Stanwyck hit her peak in the 1940s, alternating between comic roles, in classics such as "The Lady Eve" (1941) and "Ball of Fire" (1941), and tough femme fatale parts in "Double Indemnity" (1944) and "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" (1946). ...
- Though her big-screen career had faltered by the late 1950s, she remained popular on TV, heading "The Barbara Stanwyck Theatre" (1960-61) and "Big Valley" (1965-69), both of which won her Emmys. ...

- Barbara Stanwyck had certainly one of her best early roles in "Ladies They Talk About", playing the equally vengeful, tough and yet vulnerable Nan in an honest non showy way. Her redemption in the final scene while certainly melodramtic still has an honest ring to it because of Stanwyck's sure handling of the role. ...
- While there have been more violent and vividly startling women's prison dramas produced by Hollywood, "Ladies They Talk About", is one of the better ones in this genre, combining an exciting story, great characters realistically portrayed and an excellent central performance by Barbara Stanwyck in the type of screen role early in her career she made her own. ...
