9. Whitney/Research/Warhol Film Project
- www.whitney.org
- The Andy Warhol Film Project.
- The films Andy Warhol made in the 1960s are among the most significant works in the career of this prolific and mercurial American artist. In the short span of five years, from 1963 through 1968, Warhol produced nearly 650 films, including hundreds of silent Screen Tests, or portrait films, and dozens of full-length movies, in styles ranging from minimalist avant-garde to commercial "sexploitation. " Warhol's films have always been highly regarded for their radical explorations beyond the frontiers of conventional cinema. With works such as Empire (1964), his notorious eight-hour shot of the Empire State Building, My Hustler (1965), a social comedy about gay life on Fire Island, and the double-screen The Chelsea Girls (1966), the first avant-garde film to achieve extensive commercial exhibition, Warhol redefined the filmgoing experience for a wide range of audiences and attracted serious critical attention as well as much publicity. ...
- The Andy Warhol Film Project began in the 1980s when the Whitney Museum and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) agreed to collaborate on the largest archival research project in the history of American avant-garde cinema: to catalogue Warhol's massive film collection, investigate its history, and preserve and re-release all the films in conjunction with a program of scholarly research and publication. Warhol himself gave his approval to the Whitney's project and handed over his original films to MoMA for cataloguing and storage in 1984. The joint project was launched publicly in 1988 with the Whitney's exhibition "The Films of Andy Warhol" and with MoMA's release of thirteen newly preserved titles. Other Warhol exhibitions held at the Whitney have included "The Films of Andy Warhol: Part II" (1994), which premiered fourteen newly preserved films, including the full-length versions of Empire and Sleep, and Andy Warhol: Outer and Inner Space (1998), a double-screen installation of Warhol's pioneering film-and-video portrait of Edie Sedgwick. The extensive research being undertaken for the project will culminate in the publication of a two-volume catalogue raisonné of the Warhol films, which will become an essential reference tool. It will document all of Warhol's cinema activities, with complete filmographic entries, film stills, and exhibition histories. ...
- Since 1989, 167 Screen Tests and more than forty feature films by Andy Warhol have been preserved and released by MoMA. The restored films are available for rental from MoMA's Circulating Film Library, and may also be seen in regular screenings at The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh. - www.butlerart.com
- ANDY WARHOL 1931-1987.
- In this century, the Pop Art portraits of Andy Warhol have preserved the images of leading contemporary figures; except that here, the artist has gone further, extending the discourse to challenge notions of fame and identity in modern society.
- Unlike traditional portraiture, Warhol relied exclusively on photography to capture the image of his subject. ... The use of photo-silkscreen allowed Warhol to transfer single, double, or multiple images onto the support, repeating the single photograph or series of views, again and again, reiterating his theme and presenting his subject in new ways. ...
- Warhol had painted portraits of pop media icons like Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, and Marilyn Monroe, in addition to a number of self-portraits, in the 1960s; but, it wasn't until 1972 that he devoted as much attention to portraiture. In 1979-80, the Whitney Museum of American Art mounted the exhibition, Andy Warhol: Portraits of the 70s, which showed the immense output of work done by Warhol in this genre. ... Although wanting to capture the subject candidly, without comment or judgment, through his masterful detachment and diffidence, Warhol, nevertheless, captured the spirit of the time and the fleeting nature of fame in a modern, disposable society.
- The portrait of painter Paul Jenkins is a wonderful example of the process undertaken by Warhol to create a fully realized portrait. Taking into account the painting style of his subject, Warhol used Jenkins's spontaneous brushwork as a backdrop for the photographic image. ... Warhol simplified the subject's features, creating a strong, iconic presence; he is a celebrity, and the Warhol portrait validates this fact.
- Carter Ratcliff states that Warhol, "appropriates the image to leave it blunter, more stark. " Warhol had said on many occasions that what you see on the surface is all there is.
- Warhol always strove to flatter his subjects. ... A Warhol portrait is not only a portrait of the subject but also one of the artist himself who, through his highly individual style and masterly manipulation of the media, made a significant contribution to this genre, in which he documented the leading figures of his day.
17. Review: I Shot Andy Warhol
- movie-reviews.colossus.net
- I Shot Andy Warhol.
- The script for I Shot Andy Warhol began life as a documentary before the producers convinced writer/director Mary Harron to transform it into a dramatic interpretation. The result is an impressive feature debut -- a provocative look at Valerie Solanas, the intellectual, possibly psychotic prefeminist who shot Warhol in 1968. In the wake of Nico Icon, a documentary about The Velvet Underground and their lead singer, this film represents the next (and certainly not last) motion picture to plunge into the strange, experimental world surrounding Andy Warhol and his Factory. ...
- Most of I Shot Andy Warhol takes place in New York City from 1966 to 1968, chronicling the period in Valerie Solanas' (Lili Taylor) life when she wrote her definitive work, SCUM Manifesto, was introduced to Andy Warhol (Jared Harris), became a fringe member of his circle, and eventually shot him. ...
- Those offended by the "male bashing" aspect of Thelma and Louise may become apoplectic during I Shot Andy Warhol. ...
- There are two other notable performances in I Shot Andy Warhol. The first, given by Jared Harris (the son of Richard Harris), is that of Warhol himself. Harris manages to capture not only Warhol's strange magnetism, but his aloof, almost-shy nature. Stephen Dorff (Backbeat) plays Candy Darling, Valerie and Warhol's transvestite companion. Supporting roles are filled by Martha Plimpton (as Valerie's best friend), Lothaire Bluteau (as Maurice Girodius, the publisher who buys the rights to Valerie's writing), and Tahnee Welch (as a member of Warhol's circle). ...
- I Shot Andy Warhol presents a toned-down, nostalgic look at New York in the late 1960s as well as the subculture that took root around Warhol -- the wild, bohemian lifestyle, complete with drugs and sex. ... In fact, I Shot Andy Warhol is daring because it makes no attempt to soften Valerie's character or blunt the downward spiral of her insanity. ...

- In June of 1968, the troubled young Valerie Solanas entered the factory and shot Andy Warhol at close range, nearly killing him. ... Andy spent two months in the hospital, but he never fully recovered from the gunshot, and had to wear a bandage around his severely damaged torso for the rest of his life. While the incident was perhaps the most traumatic event in Andy Warhol's life, his return to the art scene was no less than triumphant.
