High school was a positive experience for Alan and he became involved in sports and participated in school productions. ...
- However, Ladd was still a long way away from entering the world of Hollywood film-making. Starting in the entertainment business, Ladd played small parts in radio shows and local theatre productions. ... Ladd's early film work was mostly minor parts, such as the role of a reporter in Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane (1914). In October 1936, Ladd married Marjorie Jane Harrold, and in 1937, Alan Ladd Jr. ...
- Despite Ladd’s initial troubles getting noticed in the Hollywood community, the persistence of Ladd’s agent, former screen actress, Sue Carol, helped the actor get more important roles in films. - www.avepix.com
- Alan Ladd Jr.
- The son of 1940s and 50s film star Alan Ladd, this former talent agent and London-based independent producer ("Walking Stick" and "A Severed Head" in 1970, "Tam Lin" and "Villain" in 1971, and "X, Y & Zee" in 1972) joined 20th Century-Fox Pictures in 1973 in the creative affairs department, rising to studio head in only three years. The more notable Fox films under Ladd's directorship were "Star Wars" (1977), "An Unmarried Woman" and "Norma Rae" (both 1978) and "The Rose" (1979). In 1979, Ladd founded The Ladd Company, based at Warner Brothers, which co-produced such diverse fare as "Chariots of Fire" (1981), "Outland" (1981), "Blade Runner" (1982), "Star 80" and "The Right Stuff" (both 1983), "Police Academy" and "Once Upon a Time in America" (both 1984).
- Ladd became president and chief operating officer of MGM/UA Entertainment in 1983, resigning in 1988 to chair Pathe. The most notable films during Ladd's tenure at MGM/UA were "Moonstruck" (1987), "A Fish Called Wanda" and "Rain Man" (both 1988). ...
- Ladd was ousted in 1993, to be replaced by Frank Mancuso, but was soon snapped up as a producer by Paramount. Concentrating less on studio politics and more on turning out individual projects, Ladd had his most notable success to date with the Oscar-winning "Braveheart" (1995), the Mel Gibson-directed epic set in 13th-century Scotland. Other Ladd films have included the successful "Brady Bunch Movie" (1995) and its enjoyable "A Very Brady Sequel" (1996), and the disappointing actioner "The Phantom" (1996). ...

- Starring: Alan Ladd & Veronica Lake.
- In fact, that credit should go to man-caught-in-the-middle Johnny Morrison's (Alan Ladd) ex-wife, who goes out of her way to make a war hero look bad.
- The Blue Dahlia is the finest noir film of it's kind and everything is absolutely perfect in the third of four films Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake would make together. ...
- Ladd returns from WWII with his two buddies only to find his wife has been unfaithful, in your face unfaithful, and responsible for his son's death while he was away. ...
- The dialog is crisp and the atmosphere perfect as Ladd finds out by accident he is being sought for the murder of his wife. Like Ladd, Lake is running from something as well and trying to help Ladd takes her right back to The Blue Dahlia. Ladd's loyal buddies, who have been through so much together overseas, are on hand to help also. Did his shell shocked friend, played nicely by William Bendix, kill Ladd's wife or was it the owner of The Blue Dahlia, or maybe someone unknown?.
- Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake were the perfect screen duo. Ladd tells Lake early on in the film that every guy had seen her somewhere before, meaning the girl we all see in our dreams. When things are all wrapped up Ladd stops her from driving away, reminding her of what he said. We know then as she does that she is Ladd's dream, and ours as well.

75. The Picture In Sal Mineo's Locker
- www.sensesofcinema.com
- Inside the door, where other boys might have photos of their girlfriends or even cheesecake pin-ups, Plato/Mineo has an autographed photo of Alan Ladd. Alan Ladd??? In addition, he has a small, scallop-edged mirror. When he is not pining over Ladd, he can look at himself in the mirror as he ritualistically combs his hair. ... The still of Ladd and the empty mirror, waiting to be filled, as well as Mineo looking intently and yearningly at Dean, are all captured in the Cinemascope frame. ...
- The question is: why would Plato/Mineo have a signed publicity photo of Alan Ladd in his locker? It's 1955. ... Alan Ladd is 43. Why would someone Mineo's age have a still of a man old enough to be his father on his locker door? The movie that made Alan Ladd's career was a film version of a Graham Greene novel, This Gun for Hire (1943). ... Years later this character, and Ladd, will serve as the prototype for the character Jeff Costello which Alain Delon plays in Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai (1967). During the war years, Ladd's unexpected success in his relatively small role in This Gun for Hire (1942) led to starring roles in any number of undistinguished but successful films. ... Why Ladd when Mineo might have had pictures of Brando, Elvis, Montgomery Clift, Rock Hudson, Tab Hunter or Jeff Chandler, among many, many other stars of the day? Even though it's clear that Plato has a crush on Jim/Dean, just having the picture implies he is a homosexual without raising too many ugly questions which no one would have wanted to or could have answered. ... The Ladd photo, even though it's a young Ladd, takes the curse off those thoughts. ...
- In it, Ladd plays a mysterious stranger with no past who happens to be very good with a gun and who falls into the lives of a homesteading family. ...
- Maybe this was what was on Plato's mind Ladd, an older father-figure type who could still, in a pinch, play romantic parts and, even in his downhill slide, was a hell of a lot cuter than the guys who played, for example, James Dean's dads in Rebel Without a Cause and East of Eden (1955). ...
- Brandon de Wilde and Alan Ladd in Shane .
- If blond, blue-eyed Brandon de Wilde similarly finds blond, blue-eyed Ladd appealing in his champagne colored buckskin clothes, perhaps we can attribute it to the blond-on-blond affinity that innocents of all ages are supposed to have for each other. In the film Ladd, de Wilde and Arthur are the only blonds in sight, while the villain (Jack Palance) is very dark indeed, down to his all-black gunslinger outfit. ... And certainly Ladd, if only in colouring, is closer to what Dean looks like than what Mineo looks like. So if we see Ladd in the locker, it hints that Mineo is already dreaming of someone who resembles Dean. Ladd was an interim infatuation until Dean, who will replace Ladd as the object of his desires, shows up. ...
