- All the test results aren’t in yet but the doctor (the vet) says that there is a chance that Meowmie has stopped being diabetic. ... I’ve always heard that temporary diabetes is not uncommon in cats but I had pretty much prepared myself for the fact that Meowmie would probably be diabetic for the rest of her life. ... That would be so great if Meow is no longer diabetic. ... It seems that a diabetic cat can go through a period of temporary recovery from the diabetic condition just as easily as a non-diabetic cat can be temporarily diabetic.
- For anyone out there with diabetic cats here are some things to remember (the vet has undoubtedly already told you these things but here it is again): Skipping an insulin shot is safer than administering too much insulin. If the cat has recently vomited due to an upset stomach or a hairball or any other reason make sure you see that the cat has eaten AND kept down some food before administering the usual amount of insulin. If the cat doesn’t eat then it’s much safer to skip the insulin. In Meowmie’s case she had been vomiting (last night) but at first it looked like the usual hairball-induced vomit and so I made sure she ate some more of her food before administering her insulin. But later that food came back up again too. ... Oh yeah that is the other really important thing for the diabetic cat owner to remember: Always have corn syrup on hand in the case of sudden hypoglycemia. ... She wouldn’t touch her regular diet cat food but she managed to eat three Pounce treats and keep them down (usually she’d be willing to gobble a dozen of those treats). ... Since this was our first experience with insulin shock I just figured that it was a result of Meowmie not being able to keep her food down due to a stomach virus or something like that. I didn’t really expect for the vet to say that she might not be diabetic anymore. ... In the meantime we’re giving her the doctor’s prescribed antibiotics in case she has a urinary tract infection (just the usual precautionary measure taken for diabetic cats that are unusually uninterested in eating and drinking and are not having to use their litter box all of a sudden) and keeping a close eye on her. ...
- Maybe even better than okay if it turns out that she is no longer diabetic!.
- I can’t count how many times I’d just be standing there waiting for my food to finish nuking and a friend of one of my housemates (who wasn’t home) would just walk in and find a seat in the living room (the waiting room) and strike up a conversation with me. ... An invitation which, unless it involved getting food, I’d usually decline due to having homework.
