- The first thing anyone looking at the Shroud sees are triangular patches added after a fire in 1532, water marks and stains. ...
- The first to notice anything particular about the Shroud was Second Pia (1855-1941), the first man allowed, in 1898, to take photographs of the Shroud. The Savoia family (at the time the owners of the relic) only gave their permission after much boot-licking and arm-twisting on the part of Pia and his higly-placed supporters (including Baron Manno, head of the Shroud commission). ...

- New Evidence Suggests Shroud of Turin may be Authentic .
- A breaking news story appearing in the August 9th edition of Rome newspaper Il Messaggero (see URL below) reveals that a 16th Century patch of medieval material was invisibly woven into the sample used to date the Shroud of Turin in 1988. There is now conclusive physical evidence that this material skewed the date making the Shroud appear as if it had been created in the Middle Ages when it may have been from the first century. ...
- The Shroud of Turin, believed by many to be the actual burial cloth of Christ, lost much of its appeal after the release of the 1988 Carbon-14 test, which dated the cloth to between 1260 - 1390 AD. At the time, it appeared that the jury was in and the final verdict on the age of the Shroud was cast. ...
- On August 9, 2002, Rome newspaper Il Messaggero, revealed that new evidence has been discovered that the sample used for dating the Shroud was contaminated by a patch used to repair the Shroud in the 16th Century. - To me, the Shroud was scientifically implausible - after all, dead men don't leave images of themselves on cloth. ... Carbon 14 tests had demonstrated that the Shroud was a medieval fake. These tests showed that the linen fabric was no more than 800 years old, which coincided nicely with the Shroud's first documented appearance in Western Europe in the mid-fourteenth century. Was this not an era well known for its fake relics? To my way of thinking, the Shroud was simply a superstitious relic - a worldview defying absurdity. ...
- The seminar was over and I thought nothing more about the Shroud until a few years later. ... However, this verdict has not quite settled the issue. Other evidence suggests an earlier date, for example a number of early medieval images of Christ that closely resemble the facial features of the shroud image. ... Whether or not it dates back as far as the first century CE - let alone depicts the actual body of Jesus - the shroud retains, for many, its mysteries. ...
- What if the Shroud is first century cloth? What if it is Jesus' burial cloth? These were daunting questions. - «All the elements of a scientific “detective novel” are present and “the case of the Holy Shroud” could very well be re-opened in a big way despite the verdict of the prestigious laboratories of Oxford, Tucson (Arizona) and Zurich, which dated the shroud of Turin between 1260 and 1390 using the carbon 14 method. A number of sindonologists have raised suspicions about the regularity of the procedure which led to the conclusion that the Shroud, this burial cloth of Christ's, is not authentic. ...
- «What is the cause of this perplexity? It is a semi-clandestine control sample that was added to the two officially passed to the three laboratories so that they might verify the correctness of their tests on the shroud cloth. ... But what is even more intriguing is that this cloth had an age (1263-1283) which coincided perfectly with that attributed to the Shroud, the age usually put forward by the opponents of its authenticity. ...
- Here, Petrosillo emphasises the similarity between the weave of the cope of Saint Louis d’Anjou ( 1297), from which this sample originated, and the weave of the Holy Shroud. ... Now, as the rest of the story will show, the fact that this fourth sample had been unravelled made it much more suitable for Tite’s purposes: because these «threads» were of linen and had been very precisely dated within the period attributed to the linen of the Holy Shroud by the opponents of its authenticity, from the perspective of nuclear physics they effectively made a double of the Holy Shroud available for dating. ...
- It is he who sought a clandestine sample outside of the protocol, requesting that it be identical in every way to the Holy Shroud and of the age “desired” by the opponents of the Turin Shroud’s authenticity: 13th - 14th century. ...
- One month before the sample-taking, Tite wrote a letter to the review Nature, officially announcing the test protocol for the radiocarbon dating of the Holy Shroud. In particular, he specified that two control samples would be supplied as complete pieces of cloth, without being unravelled or shredded, and that the test would be carried out “blind”, though he admitted that the sample from the Shroud would be recognisable even if it were unravelled. ... Just at the time that he was publishing these conditions, Tite wrote to Jacques Évin, director of the Radiocarbon Laboratory at the University of Lyons, requesting a sample of mediaeval cloth from the 13th-14th century, one that resembled the Holy Shroud as closely as possible. ...
- According to the French sindonologist, Tite wanted to obtain a clandestine sample in order to make a hasty substitution of it for the fragments of the Shroud during the “mescolamento” of the tubes. ...
- The “leaks” were the work of David Sox, Tite’s friend, who two weeks before the official publication by Ballestrero on 13 October last, had finished printing his book tellingly entitled: “THE SHROUD UNMASKED. ...
- On 7 September 1989, seventeen months after the event, the Italian Franco Testore set out for the first time the weight of the samples weighed by him at each stage of the sample-removal process carried out on the Holy Shroud on 21 April 1988: a strip of cloth measuring 81 mm x 16 mm had been divided into three pieces which were handed under seal to the representatives of the laboratories assisting at the sample-removal process. ...
- For a very simple reason: the samples originating from the cloth from the “13th-14th century”, included by Tite as substitutes for those taken from the Shroud, had been «prepared from a strip of cloth measuring 7 x 1 cm. ... - , photography), produced evidence which (it was previously believed), supported the remarkable interpretation that the Shroud was a product of divine authorship1. In this context, Pia's negative photographic images revealed such precise physiological information about the man in the Shroud, that it was possible for medical practitioners and sindonologists alike, to claim that they could determine (amongst other things), the man's race and age (Wilcox, 1978 : 129-36; Stevenson, 1981 : 42-5, 153-4), the exact cause of his death and even such facts as the number of men who scourged him (Stevenson, 1981 : 45-6; Rinaldi, 1972 : 28). ...
- However, what seems to have been overlooked here, is that before the advent of modern photography and our supposedly superior scientific understanding of the workings of the natural world, who on earth would have been able to have deciphered the incredible details encoded within the Shroud of Turin? Furthermore, if we are obliged to accept that this artifact is nothing more than a mere medieval forgery of Christ's burial cloth, then how precisely did these `forgers' produce it and what were the circumstances which necessitated them to manufacture it in the way they actually did? Finally, how would a person living in the late thirteenth century have treated with this artifact? After all, the Shroud obviously purports to be the original linen cloth that wrapped the crucified Christ, `imprinted' with his divine image an image (albeit negative) which is miraculously composed of Christ's own blood and sweat 2. As can be appreciated, all of these factors, when viewed together, make it quite difficult to classify the Shroud (in terms of a more logocentric tradition) as being either an eikon, a religious image or a relic. ...
- For example, if viewed as an eikon, one may be tempted to favour the interpretation that the Shroud is of Byzantine origin. This is because, without the benefit of photographic enhancement, the image on the Shroud, (ie as it would have appeared to the medieval viewer), depicts Christ with large owlish eyes, whose feet point downwards, seemingly defying gravity. These factors taken together with the observation that the composition is strictly frontal, vertically symmetrical and appears to the uninformed spectator as a mere two-dimensional design, seem to relate the Shroud more readily with the accepted standards of early Byzantine iconography. ...
- In this modern guise, the Shroud suddenly concurs with many aspects of western art. ...
- In addition, the Shroud seems to refer directly to the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and can therefore be shown to date from a time when the Christian faith had become more focussed on the personality of Christ. ...
- Considering that by the thirteenth century, the transubstantiated bread and wine of the Eucharist were believed by the faithful to be far more important than other relics of saints (regardless of their actual manufacture, authenticity or pedigree), one wonders how the faithful, Byzantine or otherwise, would have viewed the Shroud as a relic of the Passion, since it would have had to have been considered as not only the tangible linen burial cloth, which enclosed the Saviour's mortal remains but also as the corporeal remains of Christ's cherished sweat and blood, the self-same blood that was shed at Calvary for the atonement of the sins-of-the-world. ...
- However, in terms of its unique means of production, the Shroud of Turin, regardless of whether it is actually western or eastern in origin, does not compare to any product made by man before the beginning of the nineteenth century, a consideration that has distracted researchers for over a century. If one, for example, briefly reviews the deductions of the famous 1978 STURP commission (Accetta, 1980 : 1921-9; Adler, 1980 : 2742-4; Pellicori, 1980 : 1913-20, 1981 : 39; Culliton, 1978 : 235-9; Weaver, 1980 : 730-752), which subjected the Shroud of Turin to some very impressive scientific testing, including such things as X-ray analysis, micro-photography, organic chemistry and spectroscopy, then one has to consider very seriously the following (verifiable) characteristics of the image, viz. ...
