- The Shroud of Turin is an archaeological textile believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. ... The sample used was a 10 mm X 70 mm strip removed from the Shroud's bottom left corner. ... My research indicates that the true age of the Shroud linen is much earlier. ...

Fungi and bacteria cultures done on samples taken from the Shroud of Turin grew the Lichenothelia and Rhodococcus, indicating that the fungi and the bacteria are still alive. ...
- My conclusions in these studies are: (l) the radiocarbon dates obtained in 1988 from the Shroud of Turin samples by the laboratories of the Universities of Arizona, Oxford, and Zurich, are a result of averaging of radiocarbon from the cellulose of the Shroud linen and radiocarbon from the Lichenothelia, Rhodococcus, and varnish deposited on the linen fibers, and (2) the image on the Shroud of Turin was formed by differential depositional thicknesses of Lichenothelia varnish directly related to the blood, sweat, and other deposits on the linen. ...

- In the artist’s statement for his newest show, The New and Improved Shroud of Turin, Volker elaborates on American culture’s almost religious devotion to consumerism: “We devote our lives day and night like monks and nuns, cloistered in offices, to the task of making money for the purpose of experiencing the ever radiant, unfolding, infinite display of more and even more consumer goods with the unshakable faith that this perfect devotion will bring everlasting joy. ...
- “I could get a job doing something else, flipping burgers at McDonald’s for 11 dollars an hour,” Volker said of this “hamburger art. ...
- With The New And Improved Shroud of Turin, he focuses on a particular aspect of our consumer culture—the religious doodad.
- For this show, Volker tackled one of the granddaddies of all religious doodads—the Shroud of Turin.
- Alternately suspected by experts of being the true burial cloth of Jesus Christ or an elaborate hoax, the Shroud gets the Volker marketing machine touch at the Barth Galleries. Volker found a way to reproduce the Shroud in mass quantities, and threw in the empty marketing words “new and improved” just for fun.
- Volker found an image of the Shroud on the Internet (where he spends a lot of his time maintaining his site, columbusart. ...
- The Columbus king of the non sequitur takes the strategy one step further with these paintings—each is a Volker painting in itself, having nothing to do with the Shroud of Turin with which it shares the piece of plywood.
- For example, The New And Improved Shroud Of Turin And Whimsical Cat At The Moment of Death features the shroud in a yellow semi-circle on the left, while outside its aura a tiny cat with a parasol dances near the mouth of a giant face. In The New and Improved Shroud Of Turin And Lady, You’ve Got Bacon In Your Hair, the shroud appears in the same position, but the right half of the painting features a woman with bacon in her hair instead of curlers.
- In some pieces, like The New and Improved Shroud of Turin And A Whiff of 2 A. ... Truck Stop Air or The New and Improved Shroud of Turin And The Insomnia Of “Six-pack” Gandhi, the Shroud looks like it may be part of the story of the painting, while in others it serves as an extra-wide left border, just a weird juxtaposition to a painting featuring some sort of weird juxtaposition. ...
- “I like how it’s like the Shroud of Turin is appearing in all of these human desperation situations,” Volker says of the finished products. ...
- “I have no ulterior motives, no pro- or anti-religious sentiment,” Volker said of his use of the Shroud. ...
- If the new paintings share anything with each other aside from the Shroud of Turin, it’s their sense of humor. ...

19. The 1988 Shroud of Turin Radiocarbon Tests Reconsidered
- members.aol.com
- The 1988 Shroud of Turin Radiocarbon Tests Reconsidered.
- Shroud of Turin Center.
- The radiocarbon dating performed on the Shroud of Turin in 1988 by laboratories located in Oxford, Tucson and Zurich concluded with a 95% probability that the linen cloth of the Shroud of Turin dated from between 1260 - 1390AD. ... A different series of statistical evaluations has been applied to this radiocarbon date data leading to the conclusion that the Shroud subsamples each contained differing levels of 14C. ... Further analysis revealed that the sample dates observed were directly related to the physical location of the sample on the Shroud linen. This necessarily implies that the linen samples were non-homogeneous as regards 14C and the radiocarbon date derived for the Shroud samples are of questionable validity. The hypothesis of a relationship between the sample location on the Shroud cloth and the date measured was evaluated and found to be statistically significant.
- The results of the radiocarbon dating of the Shroud of Turin(1) caused many who believed that the cloth which was tested could no longer be considered the authentic burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. Further, a number of researchers who had devoted a substantial portion of their research time on issues related to the Shroud saw their funding evaporate or lost further interest. For a number of years, interest in the Shroud waned, only to revive in the late 1990’s in anticipation of two public viewings of the Shroud, one in 1998 and the other in 2000. ...
- As noted in the original research, “the spread of measurements for sample 1 (Shroud of Turin sample) is somewhat greater than would be expected from the errors quoted”. Applying a c2 test to their data, the authors noted, “that it is unlikely that the errors quoted by the laboratories for sample 1 (Shroud of Turin Sample) fully reflect the overall scatter”. ...
- To perform an independent statistical assessment on the data reported for the radiocarbon testing of the Shroud of Turin, a series of standard statistical evaluations were performed on the radiocarbon dates for sample AA-3367, 2575 and ETH-3883 - the Shroud of Turin samples. ...

- Radiocarbon Dating of the Shroud of Turin.
- Very small samples from the Shroud of Turin have been dated by accelerator mass spectrometry in laboratories at Arizona, Oxford and Zurich. ... The results provide conclusive evidence that the linen of the Shroud of Turin is mediaeval.
- The Shroud of Turin , which many people believe was used to wrap Christ's body, bears detailed front and back images of a man who appears to have suffered whipping and crucifixion. ... After many journeys the shroud was finally brought to Turin in 1578 where, in 1694, it was placed in the royal chapel of Turin Cathedral in a specially designed shrine.
- Photography of the shroud by Secondo Pia in 1898 indicated that the image resembled a photographic 'negative' and represents the first modern study. Subsequently the shroud was made available for scientific examination, first in 1969 and 1973 by a committee appointed by Cardinal Michele Pellegrino 1 and then again in 1978 by the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP)2. Even for the first investigation, there was a possibility of using radiocarbon dating to determine the age of the linen from which the shroud was woven. The size of the sample then required, however, was ~500cm, which would clearly have resulted in an unacceptable amount of damage, and it was not until the development in the 1970s of small gas-counters and accelerator-mass-spectrometry techniques (AMS), requiring samples of only a few square centimetres, that radiocarbon dating of the shroud became a real possibility. To confirm the feasibility of dating the shroud by these methods an intercomparison, involving four AMS and two small gas-counter radiocarbon laboratories and the dating of three known-age textile samples, was coordinated by the British Museum in 1983. ... Following this intercomparison, a meeting was held in Turin in September-October 1986 at which seven radiocarbon laboratories (five AMS and two small gas-counter) recommended a protocol for dating the shroud. In October 1987, the offers from three AMS laboratories (Arizona, Oxford and Zurich) were selected by the Archbishop of Turin, Pontifical Custodian of the shroud, acting on instructions from the Holy See, owner of the shroud. ... The procedures for taking the samples and treating the results were discussed by representatives of the three chosen laboratories at a meeting at the British Museum in January 1988 and their recommendations 4 were subsequently approved by the Archbishop of Turin.
