- The Holy Shroud of Turin, Italy, perhaps the burial shroud of Jesus himself, was on display in the cathedral chapel that had been built to house it 280 years earlier. Many people had decided the shroud was a medieval hoax, a painting. Others clung to the belief that this was the authentic shroud of Jesus. Turin’s bishop had agreed that photography might be a way to save the faint, reddish image of a crucified man in case the shroud itself would be lost or destroyed.
- The shroud in Turin had been nearly lost to fire and who knows what else depending upon its true age. During its worst episode, in 1532, Franciscan priests and Poor Clare nuns had rescued the shroud from a roaring fire that was melting its silver container and burning holes in the shroud. The nuns repaired the shroud.
- The negative photographic plate reveals the image of a man in far greater clarity than anyone had ever seen on the shroud itself. Copies of Pia’s negative image traveled around the world and generated tremendous interest in the Shroud of Turin. That which had been seen by a handful of people once each generation when the shroud went on display now could be seen by millions via photography. ...
- Decades of research, especially intense during the 1970’s and 1980’s, revealed many facts about the shroud and raised even more questions. It seems that every time a scientist said something certain about the shroud, another scientist or group of scientists would challenge the results. That’s even true of the 1988 carbon test that dated the shroud’s origins between 1290 and 1360.

- To be convinced, skeptical, or merely intrigued are all fair responses to becoming well informed about the Shroud of Turin. ... "The quest for the Shroud can lead only to the quest for Christ", wrote Dr. ...
- Other evidence suggests an earlier date, for example a number of early medieval images of Christ that closely resemble the facial features of the shroud image. ... Whether or not it dates back as far as the first century CE - let alone depicts the actual body of Jesus - the shroud retains, for many, its mysteries.
- But what if the Shroud is first century cloth? What if it is Jesus' burial cloth? I am a theologically liberal thinking person - brought up on Bishop Robinson's Honest to God and now an avid reader of Marcus Borg - and I accept many things in the Bible that are scientifically or historically implausible as something of a metaphor. For me, these questions about the Shroud's authenticity were daunting. - McCRONE, JUDGMENT DAY FOR THE TURIN SHROUD. ...
- This book reviews scientific research on the Shroud of Turin from the 1960s to the present more thoroughly than any single publication to date. ... Walter McCrone was one of the original members of the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP), which was formed in 1977. ... An amalgam of scientific exposition with digressions into the history of art and artists' materials, personal memoir, and religiopolitical exposé, this book stands in a class by itself, much like its author, a scientist best known to conservators and conservation scientists as a teacher and champion of the polarizing light microscope, one of the fundamental research tools in the study of works of art. The battlefield-diary tone of much of the book must be understood in the context of McCrone's role as STURP persona non grata, the lone member who questioned the authenticity of the shroud.
- The subject of this book, the Shroud of Turin, is a piece of linen with full-length, nearly complete front and back images of a man. ... The first appearance of the shroud dates to about 1356, when it was displayed in a newly built church in Lirey, France, as the shroud in which Jesus had been wrapped after his crucifixion. At the time of its second exhibition, in 1389, a letter written by a French bishop claimed that the shroud was a cunningly painted fake, as attested, so the letter states, by the painter who created it. The shroud has been restored to some extent, and contains scorch marks and water stains from a 1532 fire. From 1453 the shroud was owned by the Royal House of Savoy; since 1984, it has been owned by the Catholic Church.
- In the early part of the book, McCrone summarizes research on the shroud by two groups of Italian scholars, the first in 1969 and the second in 1973, quoting at some length (with his own commentary) from their reports. ... In 1973, a Swiss forensic scientist, Max Frei, took about two dozen samples from the shroud by pressing pieces of sticky tape on various parts of the surface. In 1978 and 1981 papers, he identified pollen from these tapes that indicated the shroud had spent a considerable amount of time in Turkey and Palestine, apparently pushing its history back beyond its first recorded appearance in 14th-century France. ...
- McCrone was invited to submit a research proposal on the shroud in 1974, but in part as a result of the 1976 publication of the Italian commission's examination, did not carry out any work. ... His final conclusions were that the shroud was a painting done in very thin red ochre/glue paint, enhanced with vermilion in blood-stained areas.
