- DEBUNKING by John H. ...
- Microscopist Walter McCrone is dead at 86, and Boston milkman Paul Revere at 85. ...
- Revere was one of two riders sent from Boston to warn John Adams and John Hancock that the British were on the way. ...
- However, McCrone raised hackles when he debunked the Shroud of Turin and Yale University's Vinland Map. ...
- The Shroud first appeared in 1356. ... In fact, not long after it was found, Pope Clement VII said it was just a drawing. ... And, until small pieces of the Shroud were carefully cleaned and carbon-dated in 1987, debunking was based on chemical results. ...

- The Shroud of Turin.
- The Shroud of Turin is reputedly Christ's burial cloth. ...
- The Shroud of Turin, as seen by the naked eye, is a negative image of a man with his hands folded. ... The shroud bears the image of a man with wounds similar to those suffered by Jesus. The shroud is wrapped in red silk and kept in a silver chest in the Chapel of the Holy Shroud in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin, Italy since 1578. ...
- The shroud is unquestionably old. ... The results said the shroud dated back to 1260-1390, and thus is much too new to be Jesus' burial linen. ...
- If the marks we perceive were caused by human body, it is clear that the body (supine) was laid lengthwise along one half of the shroud while the other half was doubled back over the head to cover the whole front of the body from the face to the feet. The arrangement is well illustrated in the miniature of Giulio Clovio, which also gives a good representation of what was seen upon the shroud about the year 1540. ...
- The cloth now at Turin can be clearly traced back to the Lirey in the Diocese of Troyes, where we first hear of it about the year 1360. ... Since 1578 it has remained at Turin where it is now only exposed for veneration at long intervals. ...
- That the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin is taken for granted, in various pronouncements of the Holy See cannot be disputed. An Office and Mass "de Sancta Sindone" was formerly approved by Julius II in the Bull "Romanus Pontifex" of 25 April, 1506, in the course of which the Pope speaks of "that most famous Shroud (proeclarissima sindone) in which our Savior was wrapped when he lay in the tomb and which is now honorably and devoutly preserved in a silver casket. ...
- Composed by his predecessor, Sixtus IV, in which Sixtus states that in the Shroud "men may look upon the true blood and portrait of Jesus Christ himself. ... , also claimed to be the authentic linen sindon provided by Joseph of Arimathea, but until the close of the last century no great attack was made upon the genuineness of the Turin relic. ...

- Open Letter to John Dominic Crossan.
- It is illustrative, however, of the problem with the Shroud. ... Of course, if the Shroud is authentic, then there is little argument left about whether or not Jesus was buried.
- As I said at the beginning of this letter, there has been a paucity of fact-embracing skepticism on the Shroud. ...
- The Shroud is important because it challenges worldview thinking. ... And as Pope John Paul II states — a man keenly aware of intellectual dilemma — the Shroud of Turin “challenges our intelligence. ...
- It may turn out that the Shroud is a medieval relic-forgery, as you suppose. It may be that the Shroud is authentic and that a perfectly natural explanation for the images eludes us for now. Absent such explanations, we may wonder: did something happen in the tomb? Did something happen within that linen Shroud? Did something happen that was so powerful that an image was translated to the cloth? .
- Just to be sure, however, “one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance, and at once blood and water flowed out” – witnessed, writes John, “by the one who saw it,” the Beloved Disciple. This blood and water, the last drops of Jesus’ wracked body, seem to have flowed copiously, if we accept the visual testimony of that strange Fifth Gospel, the Shroud, which may have been a treasure of the church of the Beloved Disciple, the same church that treasured the evolving Fourth Gospel .
- To be convinced, skeptical, or merely intrigued are all fair responses to becoming well informed about the Shroud of Turin. ...
- For instance, I have not discussed the discoveries of mites on the Shroud which are indigenous to the Middle East. Nor have I discussed mineral encrusted pollen spores found on the back of the Shroud, which were likely formed by the damp cools surfaces of limestone caves or tombs. I have not discussed the discovery of a sliver of oak wood in the region of the back of the head on the Shroud. ...
- Other then recounting the legend of Abgar and Thaddeus Jude, I have not covered the subject of plausible possibilities for how the Shroud came to be in Edessa. ...

- To illustrate the position of the Church about the Holy Shroud of Turin, I consider necessary some preliminary statements. The first one is this: if the Turin Shroud is an archaeological object, a sheet with an image and some blood stains, it is therefore necessary to realize a rigorous analysis of the object. Science must autonomly, and obviously in a multidisciplinary context, provide the evidence for the authenticity or not of the Shroud. ...
- When one speaks about the Shroud authenticity, it is necessary to come to an understanding and to distinguish two authenticity levels. ... Also at the hypothesis that it is medieval, the Shroud would always remain an unicum. We don't have in the world any cloth with vaguely similar characteristics to those that are observed on the Turin relic. ...
- If for a completely unlikely hypothesis it is medieval, the Shroud would always remain authentic in itself and not a forgery. ... But if science shows that that sheet is dated back to the first century, the Shroud and evangelical data convergence is so high that there is an astronomic probability level that that Man is Jesus of Nazaret. ...
- Faith doesn't enter therefore into the verification course of the Shroud authenticity. Not only, but it must be clear that the faith in Jesus Christ doesn't depend at all on the Turin cloth authenticity. ... The present pontifical custodian of the relic, Cardinal Giovanni Saldarini, in a dossier given to Italian bishops on May 13, 1996 has clarly repeated that "faith is not founded upon the Shroud authenticity and never it has been mentioned like an evidence of Christianity truth. ...
- However, let me say that, if the Shroud is authentic, as I am absolutely convinced and as Pius XI and Paul VI were, and very convinced is John Paul II, then this relic is not irrelevant for my faith. ...
- Towards the Shroud, it should be avoided the double excess of whoever wants to devalue it and of whoever wants to overestimate it. We don't need either iconoclasts or fundamentalists of the Shroud. ...
- We use it here in the generic sense of image, surely not to mean a sacred painting of Oriental kind, because it is scientifically certain that the Shroud image is not a painting.

- As many of you know, the Shroud of Turin is one of the most remarkable historical artifacts on planet Earth. Believed by many to be the actual burial cloth of Christ, the Shroud has been the subject of intense devotion, exhaustive scientific research, heated debates, and ongoing controversies. Recently, SI DIGEST, the online newsletter of the COMMITTEE FOR THE SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION OF CLAIMS OF THE PARANORMAL (CSICOP), published an article by Joe Nickell about the Shroud of Turin that dismissed the Shroud as "perhaps the world's most notorious religious hoax. " Since CSICOP claims to champion serious scientific investigation, I immediately wrote the editors and asked them to either issue a public retraction concerning the Shroud article they published and/or offer an explanation as to why they ran an article on the Shroud that was so blatantly biased and uninformed. - They responded by clarifying a sentence in Nickell's story concerning the Shroud being part of a phoney faith-healing scheme to bilk credulous pilgrims (Nickell's, according to the editors of SI DIGEST, was referring to what took place in the 14th century, not what is taking place now in Turin). The SI DIGEST editors also included a longer article by Nickell, which elaborated on Nickell's current Shroud views. After sharing the longer Nickell article with Schwortz -- one of a handful of people on the planet who actually studied the Shroud in person with a team of highly-trained scientific experts -- Schwortz offered a more thorough rebuttal of Nickell's scholarship and views.

The Shroud allows us to understand what Christ wanted to go through. ... " For the Pope, the Shroud is "the icon of the suffering of the innocent of all times. ...

- Does anyone else see all the contradictions here? The Shroud, which has already been shown to be a medieval production many times over, cannot be an "icon to suffering" if it is a fake. ... Thus, the Pope reveals that he must believe it to be genuine - but on faith? Yet he said that it is not a matter of faith! Then he states that he wants the scientists to keep an open mind? Not only should he heed that message himself, he should then direct it at the legions of shroudies who will insist that it is genuine no matter what scientific or empirical evidence is presented. ...

- As I read of the Pope viewing the Shroud of Turin on Sunday, May 24, that lengthy, hostile relationship came to mind. In his comments, the Pope encouraged scientists to continue testing the linen believed by many to have once held the body of Christ. ...
- But in his book, Inquest On The Shroud Of Turin, Joe Nickell, Ph. ... , examines the history of the shroud, and the results of the testing that has already been performed. The single cloth, one of forty shrouds asserted over time to have been used as Jesus' burial shroud, is of a weave not known to exist at that time, and does not fit the description from the Bible (John 20:5-7) of multiple cloths with a separate one covering the face. Also, prior to the middle of the 14th century, there is no historical record of this particular shroud; at that time, evidence of fraud was uncovered by a bishop in France, and an .

- As millions view shroud in Italy, the mystery persists: Is it Christ's?.
- TURIN, Italy -- Huge crowds of believers are flocking to a newly o pened display of the Shroud of Turin despite the conclusions of scientists who say that the mysterious cloth cannot be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ.
- 6 million people, including Pope John Paul II, have already made reservations to attend the two-month exhibition, the first public display of the shroud in 20 years and only the fourth this century.
- Organizers expect as many as 3 million people to view the shroud before it is removed from public display on June 14. ...
- The gigantic response to the first public unveiling of the shroud in 20 years proves that the faithful are not deterred by the work of a team of scientists who used carbon-14 dating techniques in 1988 and concluded that the linen cloth comes from the medieval era, not the time of Christ.
- Believers in the shroud's authenticity -- and they are legion -- have been buoyed by challenges to the validity of the carbon tests and by new scientific data suggesting that the cloth may in fact have come from Jerusalem, where Jesus was put to death.
- "We know that the science went wrong, and the general public is not impressed by the carbon-14 results," said Virginia Crispino, an American scholar who has researched the shroud for 28 years. "The millions of people coming to Turin are not coming to see a fake. ...
- "The shroud goes very deeply into a person," said Mrs. Crispino, who is in Turin for the duration of the exhibition. ... The miracle of the shroud is the effect it has on people who go to see it. ...
- The shroud has been venerated by Pope John Paul II and many of his predecessors, but the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church are careful not to state that the shroud is definitely the actual burial cloth of Jesus Christ. They say instead that the shroud is an important symbol of Christ's pain.
- Researchers who believe further scientific tests may establish that the shroud is actually from the time of Christ contend that the radiocarbon test results are flawed because of biological and chemical contamination of the shroud during the centuries since the crucifixion.
- They hold that the results are inaccurate because the shroud was exposed to a serious fire when it was in the French town of Chambery in 1532 and that carbon from the smoke and flames landed on the shroud, greatly altering its carbon levels and altering the test results.
- Those who question the test results also say the shroud has been altered by a light coating of micro-organisms that have attached themselves to the cloth this century.
