Merz) loses his yarmulke at Calvary and never retrieves it--a more convincing argument for a subtle anti-Semitism than Caiphas' comic book characterization)--but I do believe that The Passion of the Christ has an imperfect hero (Pilate), a perfect villain (Caiphas), and a MacGuffin used as Nietzsche's rope in a perverse, confusing tug-of-war (Christ). The Passion of the Christ is so literal that it actually has very little to do with Christ and everything to do with His betrayal, trial, torture, and execution.
