- Women, Seduction, and Betrayal in Biblical Narrative.
- Alice Bach applies literary theory, cultural representations of biblical figures, films, and paintings to a close reading of a group of biblical texts revolving around the ‘wicked’ literary figures in the Bible. She compares the biblical character of the wife of Potiphar with the Second Temple Period narratives and rabbinic midrashim that expand her story. She then reads Bathsheba against a Yiddish novel by David Pinski, and finally looks at the Biblical Salome against a very different Salome created by Oscar Wilde, and the selection of Salomes created by Hollywood. Bach argues that biblical characters have a life in the mind of the reader independent of the stories in which they were created, thus making the reader the site at which the texts and the cultures that produced them come together.

- The problem of listening to the voices of biblical women is never simple, even when they are more present in the text and we have access to their words and actions. We cannot access the lives of actual historical women, but the text does provide a window into the biblical world. The author(s) did not write in a vacuum, and the real women of that time created the cultural context out of which the characters were drawn.
- Biblical characters, both women and men, function in a mythological capacity within our own society: as historical memories transmitted through a religious text that was, and remains, meaningful to a people. ... And yet, none of the biblical characters is perfect; the models they present are of human behaviour, complete with confusions and flaws. ...
- Following in a long tradition of biblical commentary that has added its own reconstructions to the narratives, we can imagine the rest of the story of Iris and find our own meaning in the text. ...

- A Catholic Introduction to Biblical Interpretation.
- " This approach does not ask, "what really happened in history?" but rather, "What happens in the biblical narrative?" and "What do these events mean in that narrative?" The focus is on the world within the text itself. ... Whereas the historical critic views the biblical text as an historical artifact to be interpreted historically, the literary critic views the biblical text as a work of literature to be analyzed according to literary methods.
- Narrative criticism focuses on biblical narrative, analyzing plot, sequence and timing of events, characterization, and the use of literary techniques such as irony, humor, and repetition as ways of developing the story and its significant themes. ...
- Rhetorical criticism uses classical rhetorical theory to analyze argumentative techniques within the biblical writings, giving attention to how the author uses style, language, emotion, and logic to persuade the reader.
- Structuralism reads the biblical writings in light of universal literary structures, interpreting biblical characters, themes and events in terms of their roles and functions within a certain structural grid or universal grammar. ...
- Reader Response criticism analyzes the biblical text in light of the experience of the reader, interpreting the text in light of the questions, expectations, surpises the reader experiences proceeding through the text, emphasizing the active role of the reader in determining the meaning of the text.
- Literary critics take seriously the literary form of the biblical writings. ...
- Divine revelation in the Bible is given in diverse literary forms and proper interpretation of that revelation must give due attention to the literary genre of any particular biblical passage and use interpretive methods appropriate to that specific form of literature. ...
- This recognition of the importance of the literary forms of biblical revelation provides justification for the use of specifically literary methods of interpretation. ...
- The historical interpretation too often reduced the rich biblical narrative to a source for the interpreter's reconstruction of history. Literary techniques, not only provide approaches appropriate to the literary form of biblical narrative, they provide a way of reading the text that grasps the role of narrative in the life of the believing community.
- There are two important reservations, the Catholic exegete must exercise toward literary approaches to the biblical text. ...

- A Prelude to Biblical Folklore .
- Treating Old Testament stories as the product of an oral traditional world, A Prelude to Biblical Folklore sets biblical narrative in a broad cross-cultural context and reveals much about the richness and complexity of the ancient Israelite civilization that produced it. Using a unique combination of biblical scholarship and folklore methodology, Susan Niditch tracks stories of biblical characters who become heroes against the odds, either through trickery or through native wisdom, physical prowess, and the help of human or divine agents. ... Linking these Old Testament heroes to the legendary tricksters and underdogs of other cultures, Niditch shows how the Israelites' worldview and self-image are reflected in the way biblical authors tell their stories. Through a thoughtful analysis of style, content, narrative choices, and attitudes to issues of gender and political authority in biblical narrative, A Prelude to Biblical Folklore draws persuasive conclusions about the identity, location, and provenance of the stories' authors and their audiences. ...

- Money, stories, characters, intrigue, conflict, ethical dilemmas -- you name it, its in the Bible, and it makes for good entertainment and engaging media.
- Pop culture is fascinated with biblical literature because stories based on the Bible make money. ...
- When a movie or TV show is made using biblical materials, the studio or network knows people will pay to see it and advertisers will buy commercial time.
- The Bible, as a literary library of ancient texts, is so vast and varied in types of literature and themes, it provides a wealth of story lines, characters and situations for pop-culture productions. ...
- Its easy for pop culture to use biblical materials because many situations portrayed in film and TV can be paralleled, accurately or not, to biblical situations.
- The show and movie center around characters who are enmeshed in situations that exhibit apocalyptic scenarios. ...
- As consumers of pop culture, it is important for us to look at how biblical material is incorporated by TV and movie writers and producers. ...
- De Milles "The Ten Commandments," 1923 and 1956; "Jesus Christ, Superstar" as rock album, stage show and movie, the late 1960s; and all the TNT (Turner Network Television) Bible movies, such as "Moses", "Joseph", "Abraham", and "Samson and Delilah," 1994 to 1997, are among many pop-culture productions that appropriate entire biblical stories or pieces of stories. ...
- The most infamous example of appropriating the biblical text, then alterating it is probably Martin Scorcese's 1988 "The Last Temptation of Christ. ...
- Even productions that follow the biblical texts interpret them by who is cast in key roles, design of sets and amount of time given to portions of stories. ...
- Quentin Tarantinos 1994 film, "Pulp Fiction," in which the character Jules methodically and emotionally recites a variant of Ezekiel 25:17 before executing his targets, and Tim Robbins "Dead Man Walking," 199_, in which biblical symbols and themes surround the execution of Matthew Poncelet, demonstrate a second pop-culture use of the Bible -- direct quotation of Scripture and adaptation of themes from Scripture.
- TVs "Touched By An Angel" and Oprah Winfreys use of angel symbolism in her "Angel Network" are examples of a third way pop culture uses the Bible -- indirectly quoting Scripture or alluding to biblical language or images.
- Pop cultures angel references are often so broad its difficult to tell if they are designed to remind viewers of a biblical passage or simply to play into a more general belief in spiritual intermediaries. ...
- Such uses can affirm the great literary quality of the Bible, and may actually encourage people to read the biblical text. ... Gomes says even though most people can recognize biblical stories, they may not have ever read them. ...
- We must approach pop-cultures use of biblical material with suspicion because that use almost always fails to do justice to the enormous complexity of the Bible, both by omission and addition. That suspicion, however, shouldn't keep us from enjoying the varied and gratifying biblical-based offerings pop culture makes available to us.

- It is also true that in the Catholic tradition, apocryphal stories concerning biblical characters (and other traditions attempting to fill in and expand on the gaps in the biblical stories) were often more popular than the biblical story itself - for example, the legends surrounding the time of the Holy Family in Egypt or the different versions of the death of the Virgin Mary. - Approaching the Biblical Text in 5757.
- As a result of this change, the stories and personalities of the Biblical characters, even if regularly pursued through the study of the Sabbath lections, have become less familiar to our people, and sadly, either forgotten or viewed as traditional relics - on display and accessible to the human eye, but lacking real form and substance.
- There are countless ways to approach the Biblical text. ... Of all these possibilities, perhaps the most vivid and accessible illustrations of the origin of the Jewish thought world may be found in the stories of the Bible, and specifically in the personalities presented in those stories, who not only come to life in the Biblical narrative, but remain alive for each generation of readers properly trained to examine the contents of this greatest of all humanity's books.
