51. Feminist Biblical Hermeneutics
- www.ars-rhetorica.net
- Feminist Biblical Hermeneutics:.
- Biblical hermeneutics explores the issue of interpretation of the Bible by developing and critiquing the various theories of literature and communication that inform the models and methods employed by biblical scholarship in its analysis of the text. Its interest and focus is on the generation of "meaning" of the biblical text and the roles played by method, text and interpreter in the production of meaning. ...
- Not only is it the case that a/the meaning of a particular passage is arrived at in order to provide a standard by which to judge further use of the biblical "text" (the interpretation of a biblical passage as foundation for use in sermons, in the life of the community and believer, in the development of theology and tradition), but it is also clear that the model itself, and the theory that informs it, argues for the recognition of an authority ("author", "text", "context", "reader") that would govern the act of interpretation. Whether biblical hermeneutical theory is historical positivist, doctrinal, dialogical-pluralist, transformational, or deconstructive, the question of interpretation is always and ultimately concerned with where authority is located in the act of reading, an authority that determines and judges any particular act of interpretation or application of the biblical text.
- American feminist biblical hermeneutics 2 explores the patriarchal ideology not only of androcentric scholarship, but within the biblical text itself. Feminist interpretation of the Bible seeks to uncover the structures of exploitation and oppression in the Bible, to bring to central focus the role of women in history, theology, and ethics, to critique the images of women as portrayed by the writers of the biblical text and as explored by its interpreters. Feminist hermeneuts are seeking alternative theories and methods by which "meaning" of the biblical text is generated, and therefrom discuss the relative merits not only of the Bible's interpretation and application, but of the Bible itself.
- The assumption of American feminist biblical scholars seems to be that once one comes to understand or interpret a biblical text, one is furnished with a means by which to judge other readings. ...
- It is the purpose of this paper to show how American feminist biblical critical appropriation of hermeneutics as a theory of interpretation has distorted the critical activity of feminist biblical critics by limiting its focus to textuality and "meaning". ...
- Biblical feminist hermeneutics and criticism share with other feminist inquiries and movements their variety of theory, critique and action, but locate in Judeo-Christianity an unique context and expression of patriarchal ideology that has served as one of its most important tools of legitimation. ... What biblical feminist hermeneutics has done is to question the "universality" and "ultimacy" of these systems and proclamations, and their subsequent legitimation by academic scholarship, by returning to the biblical text and identifying the "particularity" of both its own discourse and the discourse of its interpretation. The unique focus of biblical feminist criticism comes not from its distinction from other feminist movements and critiques. ... It is feminist biblical hermeneutics' particular claim that to focus on religion is to focus on a particularly powerful expression of patriarchy. It is the unique position of the Bible not only in their own lives, but as the (supposed) authoritative and fundamental document of Western ideology and social structure, that makes the feminist biblical hermeneutical enterprise both necessary and important.
- Yet, like other feminists, feminist biblical hermeneuts show no unity in their definition of "patriarchy" and the nature to which the Bible reflects it, in their interpretive approach, in the authority they grant to the Bible in relation to feminist consciousness. ...

- THE BIBLICAL VIEW OF THE EXTENT OF THE FLOOD.
- Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Theology.
- The Biblical flood narrative represents the story of the greatest incision in world history. ...
- Traditionally the Biblical flood narrative has been understood to refer to a universal catastrophe of world-wide dimensions (8). ... Significant in this assessment is the acknowledgment that on the one hand the Biblical picture portrays a "universal Deluge" which is not denied and on the other hand "geological science has demonstrated that a Flood has never simultaneously covered the whole surface of the globe . ...
- On the basis of the evidences from the natural sciences, Schedl argues that the Biblical narrator formulated "the flood narrative, just as the creation narrative, from the Ancient Near Eastern picture of the world . ... Biblical writers are considered to reflect the limitations of their pagan predecessors and contemporaries.
- The problem accordingly is not one primarily of the Biblical text but one of critical and liberal scholarship. ... Gilkey, himself belonging to the liberal school of scholars, writes incisively of modern scholarship that it is "half liberal and modern on the one hand, and half Biblical and orthodox on the other, i. ... its world view or cosmology is modern while its theological language is Biblical and orthodox" (18). He states "What has happened is clear: because of our modern cosmology, we have stripped what we regard as 'the Biblical point of view' of all its wonders and voices. ... He also uncovers why the liberal critical school arrives at its understanding of the Biblical text. "First there is the job of stating what the Biblical writers meant to say, a statement couched in the Bible's own terms, cosmological, historical, and theological" (20). Often critical scholars seek to understand Bible writers on their own terms; if the Biblical picture is in conflict with the modern understanding of the world and man, then the Biblical view is reinterpreted in such a way so as to remove its conflict with that of the modern conception.
- There is a great number of scholars who do not follow the hermeneutical categories of critical Biblical scholarship. A common feature of those who are conservative or evangelical in their theological outlook is their high esteem of Biblical authority and inspiration. This does not allow them to treat lightly the point of view of the Biblical writer because he reveals divine truth and not just ancient religious points of view. Biblical statements are authoritative and binding for faith. On the basis of this common starting-point two avenues are open when there is a conflict between a modern understanding of natural phenomena and a Biblical truth. ...

60. Biblical Divorce And Re-Marriage
- www.frankcaw.com
- Biblical Divorce And Re-Marriage.
- NOTE: This article is unrelated to my new book on biblical prophecy.
- During biblical times, Jewish Law recognized several basic moral justifications for divorce or nullification of a marriage contract between a man and his wife.
- (See "Biblical Divorce And Remarriage" by Rev. ...
- Moreover, common sense logic and other biblical scriptures require us to add violence and health-or-life-threatening abuse to our list of reasons because such evil activities are always prohibited for everyone, regardless of their marital status in life.
- This means, according to Matthew 5:32, that any such behavior is biblical grounds for divorce.
- At first glance, this passage might seem to say that if a mean-spirited man arbitrarily divorces his wife without just biblical reason, i. ...
- Likewise, some people might argue that both Luke 16:18 and Matthew 5:32 speak of a man divorcing his wife for just, biblical cause and then marrying again, but that nothing is said about a woman being permitted to do likewise by divorcing her husband for just, biblical cause and then later re-marrying.
- This type of reasoning whereby we must balance various moral laws and biblical scriptures against each other in order to glean the highest level of truthful understanding possible is further illustrated by Luke 16:18, which reads as follows:.
- It is only after we follow this procedure that we realize fornication on the part of one's spouse is biblical justification for divorce and re-marriage.
- So, is mental adultery or sexual fantasy sufficient biblical grounds for a divorce?.
- But, if the mental betrayal by your spouse is sufficiently severe or habitual, and they are not repentant, and your feelings of hurt and pang over this matter are substantial, then perhaps divorce is a viable biblical solution.
- According to this passage, if both husband and wife are Christian believers, and one of them leaves the other, then both of them are commanded to remain in an "unmarried" or separated condition unless they reconcile and reunite back with each other; neither party has the biblical right to seek a divorce from the other.
- Therefore, the offended marriage partner who is divorced against their will, without just biblical cause, would no longer be under any further obligation to their now-defunct marriage contract, so obviously they would be single again and free to re-marry.
- But, if a "believing" spouse exercises their God-given gift of free will by getting a divorce without just biblical cause, then the covenant is, in fact, broken despite God's admonition not to do so.
- However, under extreme circumstances, I believe there can be biblical exceptions, even to this rule, if we carefully and honestly weigh all relevant moral concerns in a judicious manner.

- Biblical Theology and the Analogy of Faith.
- But since Roman Catholicism never regards these two sources as clashing with each other, it would always affirm heartily that its theology is biblical. ...
- It is noteworthy, however, that the term "biblical theology" first appeared in the followers of the Reformation, among those who espoused the principle of sola scriptura. ...
- For one thing they rejected the medieval practice of finding in a biblical passage a fourfold sense: the literal, the allegorical, the moral, and the anagogical (or mystical, ultimate) sense. ...
- Both Luther and Calvin strove to master the language conventions of the biblical Hebrew and Greek so they could more readily grasp the meaning the biblical writers attached to their own terms, and be less apt to impute current meanings back onto those ancient words. ...
- Only among the followers of the Reformation could the concept 'biblical theology' have been coined at all. ...
- " This principle was used when the time came to combine what two or more biblical writers said about some article of faith like the law (Moses or Paul), or justification (Genesis, Paul, and James). In general, the analogy-of-faith principle of hermeneutics affirms that the norm for interpreting other parts of the Bible is certain passages in the Pauline letters, which supposedly set forth biblical teachings with the greatest clarity and precision. ...
- Even though this tradition was now of a Protestant rather than of a Roman Catholic variety, yet the barrier which it erected against letting biblical exegesis improve or correct that tradition was exceedingly hard to surmount. ...
- Those who are committed to sola scriptura want their understanding of such passages as well as those setting forth all other biblical teachings, to be deepened and corrected by a careful exegesis of all of them. ...
- Calvin jeopardized biblical authority by regarding the Gospel of John as the "key" for understanding the Gospel of Matthew. ...
- So long as the exegesis of biblical passages is conducted by such analogy-of-faith hermeneutics, it would be difficult for systematic theology to be nourished and corrected by exegetical considerations from the biblical text. ... While the reformers themselves introduced into biblical exegesis many practices which greatly furthered the cause of sola scriptura, yet because they did not grasp how their analogy-of-faith principle clashed with sola scriptura, they gave a strong impetus for Reformation theology also to revert to a scholasticism not unlike the medieval sort against which they had rebelled. ...

65. Can a Charismatic Theology Be Biblical?
- home.regent.edu
- Can a Charismatic Theology Be Biblical? .
- Traditional Theology and Biblical Emphases .
- Biblical theology has demonstrated a sharp divergence in emphases between the New Testament and traditional systematic theology in the areas of hermeneutics, the Holy Spirit, the kingdom of God, soteriology, and faith, among others. ... By contrast, the more objective discipline of biblical theology shows the New Testament emphases within these doctrines to be somewhat more charismatic. ... The consequence of this approach is that a strongly charismatic theology is also, centrally, a biblical theology, normatively binding on all who claim scripture as their primary principle of religious authority.
- In many Evangelical minds, the expressions, "biblical theology" and "charismatic theology" are not intimately associated. ...
- This paper does not attempt to argue directly for the legitimacy of the charismatic movement or its experience, <2> but rather to note that we Evangelicals who commit ourselves to an inerrant scripture as the foundation for faith and practice must face the theological implications of the biblical emphases within key doctrines with respect to their charismatic content. ...
- To distill an enormous answer into a sentence or two, we would postulate that historically conditioned polemical and apologetical questions, based on problematic philosophical assumptions, were asked of the biblical text. ...
- This leads us to ask, "If tradition and scripture portray substantially different emphases within certain doctrines, then which portrayal should we declare as normative for theology?" I would suggest that today we stand at a crossroads, a forced choice, between the profile of emphases based on more objective results of biblical text analysis, as against the profile of emphases deriving from a long evolution of theological tradition. ...
- This is followed by a description of emphasis patterns within selected doctrines, as laid out by: 1) traditional Evangelicalism, 2) contemporary biblical theology, and 3) some procedures of content analysis. ...
- The purpose of this paper is not simply an exercise in polemics, but an attempt to restore, on biblical criteria, some key theological emphases of a holy, authoritative, inspired and inerrant scripture, and thereby to express a truly normative, biblically-grounded theology for all believers in Christ Jesus. ...
- It is possible that these various devices could produce contradictory results, but at least the conflict would be fought out on biblical grounds rather than on external agendas. ... These simple hermeneutical devices are not new, but in biblical studies it has not been used consistently enough by Evangelicals,<19> which, if applied, would allow, to the extent possible, the biblical text, rather than traditions, to dictate a hierarchy of emphases and values. ...
- This section examines four traditional doctrines of Evangelicalism which have evolved far away from their normative, biblical, charismatic emphases: a) the Holy Spirit; b) the kingdom of God; c) soteriology; and, d) faith. Each section begins with a traditional Evangelical statement of emphases within the doctrine, followed by some results of biblical theology which show a much greater charismatic emphasis in the NT, which in turn is followed by a refinement of contribution from content analysis, which even further expands the charismatic role in each doctrine. ...

- Since the Septuagint is not a Hebrew text and the Samaritan version reached us through a breakaway sect, their value to reflect the early stages of the Biblical text was debatable. ... 74. The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy
- www.gty.org
- on Biblical Inerrancy .
- NOTE: This was the statement that launched the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy, an interdenominational joint effort by hundreds of evangelical scholars and leaders to defend biblical inerrancy against the trend toward liberal and neo-orthodox conceptions of Scripture.
- The congress ultimately produced three major statements: this one on biblical inerrancy in 1978, one on biblical hermeneutics in 1982, and one on biblical application in 1986. ...
- We affirm that inspiration, through not conferring omniscience, guaranteed true and trustworthy utterance on all matters of which the Biblical authors were moved to speak and write.
- We further deny that this absence renders the assertion of Biblical inerrancy invalid or irrelevant.
- We deny that Biblical infallibility and inerrancy are limited to spiritual, religious, or redemptive themes, exclusive of assertions in the fields of history and science. ...
- We further deny that inerrancy is negated by Biblical phenomena such as a lack of modern technical precision, irregularities of grammar or spelling, observational descriptions of nature, the reporting of falsehoods, the use of hyperbole and round numbers, the topical arrangement of metrical, variant selections of material in parallel accounts, or the use of free citations.
- The theological reality of inspiration in the producing of Biblical documents corresponds to that of spoken prophecies: Although the human writers' personalities were expressed in what they wrote, the words were divinely constituted. ...
- Inasmuch as all Scripture is the product of a single divine mind, interpretation must stay within the bounds of the analogy of Scripture and eschew hypotheses that would correct one Biblical passage by another, whether in the name of progressive revelation or of the imperfect enlightenment of the inspired writer's mind.
- When these un- and anti-Biblical principles seep into men's theologies at presuppositional level, as today they frequently do, faithful interpretation of Holy Scripture becomes impossible.
