- I've complained before about the rise in annoying TV-style commercials embedded in web pages. ... Advertising execs who still can't understand the nature of the internet, and who don't want to waste any more creative effort on designing different ads for the internet, are increasingly just throwing their TV commercial online. They're not doing this in a smart way, like Honda did, by creating compelling and entertaining advertising that people want. They're just doing it because they seem to think that disruptive and intrusive advertising is a good thing - rather than something that gets a negative response from people. Furthermore, as people are finally making it clear they don't like bad and irrelevant TV commercials, these execs are taking the backwards step of assuming that means they just need to shove out more of these ads people don't want. The smart advertising exec would realize (like Honda did with their commercial and BMW did with BMW films) that advertising is free content and people get online to get free content - so if you make it good, relevant, and entertaining, people will come and search it out. ...

- Of course, the big question is how do PVRs affect the viewing of advertisements? Surprisingly, Ad Age notes that the study did not find much difference between PVR and television commercial viewing: The study also showed that viewers' likelihood of watching commercials when viewing programs with PVRs vs. live TV is nearly the same. Only 1% said they always watch the ads when using a PVR or watching live TV, while 60% said they occasionally watch them with PVRs and 62% with live TV. ... - BONN: Television commercials will soon be a thing of the past and are going the way of dinosaurs, according to a new study in Germany. Mercer Management Consulting Agency has urged TV network executives to start planning for the "post-commercial age" of broadcasting. ...
- Networks which persist in airing commercials will be airing them to nobody -- a fact which will cause advertisers to turn to other media.
- But, by that time, advertising dollars will be shifting away from the traditional TV commercial spot, says the Mercer study.
- East Germany had two state-operated TV channels and no commercials.
- The public channels were restricted to 20 minutes of pre-primetime commercial advertising on weekdays. No advertising was permitted on Sundays or holidays.
- But now the media revolution has ensured that the average German household has access to scores of channels, most of them commercial networks free to air advertising 24 hours a day, seven days a week. ... This scenario has led to intense competition for every single dollar spent on advertising.
- German national TV advertising revenues peaked in 2001 at US$18 billion, and have been edging downward every year since then, down US$3 billion so far. Mercer's analysts say that, of the US$3 billion that have vanished from the TV advertising market in the past three years, two-thirds of that sum found its way into other advertising avenues. ...

19. J. Stigel: "Minimalism in TV Commercials"
- imv.au.dk
- It is common knowledge that over the years and seen on an international level the TV spot commercial has become shorter and shorter. ... Firstly it becomes rather difficult to transform the advertising message into entertaining, small visual dramas as a frame of 30 seconds is normally the limit to do so. ... Secondly, in so far as TV-ads are organized in blocks, the overall picture in the advertising blocks seen as a whole becomes more and more blurred and confused as the speed at which the different brands, messages and execution styles are blown out into the audience, increases.
- The time pressure on the TV spot in this way raises a question as to how it is possible to vary these minimal formats, variation and differentiation being the central sources in advertising's competition for attention. ... You might also put it this way: fighting against time and the surrounding spots the TV spot has to find ways in which the input is minimal while the output (on behalf of the audience) is maximal. ...

- TV-ads are forced to conform to or assimilate and develop this minimalistic form due to economic necessity (time-pressure) but also due to what has become a cultural demand as regards advertising in general. Advertising is not just a question of bare information of product, price and place in a referential sense. ... Through the 20th century advertising itself has taught its audiences to expect new products as well as new and spectacular or sensational ways of informing about products. ... This is not only due to the fact that something extra, something that appeals to other dimensions of the audience's experience has got to be a part of advertising. ... Consequently advertising like other informing instances has forced upon itself a development of creativity and execution styles, a demand for sophistication, a demand for constant renewal of ways of communicating and creating symphaty.
